Seminar - Sustainable composites for commercial aviation and building infrastructure sectors by Prof. Debes Bhattacharyya

Date:    07 June 2013 (Friday)

Time:   10:30 am – 11:30 am

Venue:  EF305, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

In the last few years, the production of polymer composites reinforced with natural fibres (green composites) has substantially increased, especially in sectors such as the automotive, leisure and furniture industry, where their reduced cost and higher bio-degradability may represent important incentives to use. However, their applications have been mainly in non-load bearing materials, with the reason being the difficulty offered by the structure of reinforcement itself and the compatibility issues when they are introduced in a polymer.

Researchers at the Centre for Advanced Composite Materials (CACM) have tackled this issue by developing relatively novel design and manufacturing techniques which could classify these composites as secondary structural load-bearing materials. Hence with this recent advancement, the application of sustainable composites can be extended into various facets of engineering, especially within the aviation and building infrastructure sectors.

This presentation will cover manufacturing and testing aspects of natural fibre reinforced composites, how they can be categorised as sustainable in nature and presenting several potential applications outlining the advantages of using them instead of synthetic counterparts.

Professor Bhattcharyya was Head of Mechanical Engineering Department at The University of Auckland for six years (1999-2005). During this time he took the primary role in establishing the Centre for Advanced Composite Materials (CACM), of which he has been the Director since its beginning in 2004. Prof. Bhattacharrya has considerable expertise in the deformation and flow of fluids, solids, and fibrous porous media, heat transfer and polymer chemistry, Liquid Composites Moulding (LCM), material behaviour, process simulation and development, and optimization. Prof. Bhattacharyya has been elected as a Distinguished Fellowship of Institution of Professional Engineers NZ (IPENZ); Hind Rattan Award for academic and social achievements, given by the Govt. of India and Non-Resident Indian Welfare Society, New Delhi, 2010; Glory of Bengal Award for academic achievements by a non-resident Bengali, given by Probashi Bengali Sammelan, Doha (Qatar), 2010; Fellowship of the Royal Society of New Zealand, 2000 and German Science Foundation (DFG) Fellowship and Guest Professorship, 1996.
