Seminar - Research and Development in the Aerospace Engineering Division, MAE, NTU, Singapore by Dr. Simon C. M. YU

In this talk, a brief overview to our current strategic research focuses in the Aerospace Engineering Division at NTU will be presented. Emphasis will be given to development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and Composite Materials in Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) activities. The talk will also touch on the latest initiative in Air Traffic Management Research. The speaker will also present some of the latest experimental results on, three-phase bubble column, two-phase micro-channel heat transfer and starting jets/plumes from his own research group.


Dr. Yu obtained his BEng(Hons) ACGI and PhD DIC (under the late Prof. J. H. Whitelaw FRS FREng) from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Imperial College, London in 1987 and 1991 respectively. He joined the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in November 1991 as lecturer. He has published more than 100 referred journal papers in different areas of fluid mechanics and had held several administrative appointments at the university; Principal Staff Officer (President Office), University Council Member, Vice-Dean (Office of Admissions). He is currently Head of the Aerospace Engineering Division. His division had successfully attracted significant research grants for research in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and Air Traffic Management (ATM) from 2008 to 2012. He was appointed as the trainer for the Holistic Gas Turbine for Rolls Royce Aeroengine Singapore in 2009. He was elected a Fellow of The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (FIMechE) U.K. and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (FRAeS), U.K. in 2008 and 2012 respectively.
