Seminar - Droplet Dispersion in a “Box of Turbulence” by Prof. Huan Lian

Abstract:

The dispersion behaviour of poly-dispersed droplets is studied experimentally in a facility of “box of turbulence”, which generates stationary homogeneous and isotropic turbulence with controllable turbulent intensity. The flow structure is measured by Time-resolved Particle Image Velocimetry (TR-PIV), Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) and the dispersed phase properties and dynamics are measured by Phase Doppler Anemometry (PDA) and Time-resolved Mie- Scattering Imaging. The talk will address the dynamic behaviour of liquid-gaseous two phase flows with emphasis on the following aspects: 1) Evaluation of the velocity invariants and the two-dimensional projection of turbulent topological structures; 2) Effect of the poly-dispersity on the intensity of droplet preferential concentration; 3) Self-similarity and temporal evolution of the ‘identified’ droplet clusters.

Bio-sketch:

Huan Lian received BEng degree in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology in 2010, Ph.D. on experimental multi-phase flows from Imperial College London in 2014. Upon completion, Lian worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Powertrain Control Laboratory of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor on optical study and reduced order modelling of flame initiation for engine instability control. Recently in 2017, Lian joined the Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and received support from “CAS Hundred Talents Program”. Her current research interests include experimental multi-phase flows, optical diagnostic and modelling of supersonic combustion.
