Seminar - Ultrasonic Guided Waves: "Promising Alternatives for Advanced Structural Health Management/NDE" by Prof. Younho Cho

Physics and fundamentals of ultrasonic guided waves are introduced along with the various cases of field applications including pipe inspection, composite structural failure monitoring, early stage damage detection and defect imaging via tomography. The use of elastic guided waves provides promising alternatives in many ways to overcome the limits of conventional point-by-point approach such as inaccessibility, time/cost consuming and deficiency in early stage monitoring. Mode selection and principle is also discussed with modeling data.


Prof. Younho Cho received his B.S. and M.S. degrees at Yonsei University, South Korea, and PhD degree from Pennsylvania State University, US. Currently, he is a professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering at Pusan National University, South Korea. His areas of research include ultrasonic guided wave NDE (Nondestructive Examination) and SHM (Structural Heath Management), tomography, nonlinear elastic wave analysis, elastic wave modeling. He has authored and co-authored over 200 refereed journal and proceedings articles.

In the international community, he has been serving as one of the executive committee members of ICNDT (International Committee of NDT) since 2012. He has been also appointed the president of the 20th World Conference of Nondestructive Testing and Board Member of International Congress on Ultrasonics, respectively.

He was the recipient of 2011 Northwestern Eshbach research award grant, U.S. He was awarded for seven Best Research Accomplishment Papers by KSNT, Korean Hip Society or KSME. He also received three Academic Awards for the Best Research Contributor from The Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies and the Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in 2010, 2011.
