Seminar - The Fast Spectral Method for the Boltzmann and Enskog Equations by Dr Lei Wu

Gas kinetic equations describe the collective motion of gas molecules from the continuum-fluid to the free-molecular flow regimes, and underpin a broad range of research areas from aerodynamics to microfluidics. However, the complex structure of the collision operator (i.e. fivefold nonlinear integral with three dimensions in velocity space and two dimensions in a unit sphere) poses a grand challenge to the numerical solution of the Boltzmann and Enskog equations. In this talk, we show how the collision operator can be solved by the fast spectral method accurately and efficiently by testing various tough numerical examples. The application of the fast spectral method to the problems of Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering and shale gas extraction is introduced.
Dr Lei Wu obtained his PhD degree in fluid mechanics from University of Strathclyde in 2013. After working as a Research Associate for 18 months, he became a Lecturer at the same university in April 2015. His research interests include nonlinear dynamics and rarefied gas dynamics. Dr Wu has published about 40 international journal papers, including Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Journal of Computational Physics, and Physical Review A/E.
