Dr Wong received his MSc and PhD degrees from the Loughborough University and the Leicester University respectively. For his MSc course, he studied “loss prevention” with Prof. Frank Lees and Prof. Trevor Kletz and his “dezincification” dissertation was supervised by Prof. David Gabe. For his PhD thesis in the area of building services life cycle costing, he was supervised by Prof. George Norman and his mentor was Prof. Roger Flanagan of the Reading University.
Prior to joining the Mechanical Engineering Department in September 1980, he worked for the HK Civil Aviation Department in the areas of air traffic flight services, flight crew licensing and examinations, and flight operations safety. During this period he completed the CAA Basic Airways and Approach Control Course at the NATS College of ATC, the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) Flight Operations Officer and the 18th UK CAA Airworthiness Course. With the aid of the Cathay Pacific Airways Lockheed L1011 Tristar Conversion Course he passed the HKCAD L1011 Technical Examination in 1978. Soon after joining the Mechanical Engineering Department, he was invited by ICAO as Visiting Lecturer in Airport Mechanical/Electrical Maintenance (ICAO Technical Assistance Programme in the Philippines 1981).
Dr Wong was elected an Associate Fellow of the Society of Licensed Aircraft Engineers and Technologists in 1977, Member of the Chartered Institute of Transport in 1978, Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1982, Member of the HKIE in 1986, Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society in 1997.
Besides being the Programme Leader of PolyU Higher Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering, HD in Mechanical Engineering and HD in Computer-Aided Engineering, he was the Course Manager of Massey University’s Master of Aviation (MAv) programme (in collaboration with PolyU). Graduates of this programme were senior professionals from the HK CAD and the aviation industry, e.g. DGCA, senior air traffic control officers, senior operations officer, assistant airport general manager, CAD medical examiner, senior engineers, lawyers (foreign and local), etc. Speakers for the MAv seminars included world-renowned experts such as Prof. Patrick Hudson (Delft University of Technology), Prof. Graham Hunt (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University), Prof. Graham Braithwaite (Cranfield University), Dr. David Pang of Airport Authority Hong Kong, etc.
Besides a reviewer for the “International Journal of Production Research” and “Construction Management and Economics”, he is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Industrial Engineering – Theory, Applications and Practice and Asian Journal on Quality.
With regard to the newly offered Aviation Stream of the MSc in Mechanical Engineering programme, he initiated four subjects: Airworthiness and Maintenance, Operations Research in Aviation, Human Factors in Aircraft Maintenance and Advanced Avionics Systems.

Abstract of the Project:
The literature on domestic gas ranges research is few and attempts to deal with limited number of parameters in an unconcerted manner. Comparing with the literature about direct research on domestic gas ranges, the study on impinging flame jets – which can be any type of gas cooker – has been more active. Effects of the Reynolds number, the nozzle-to-plate distance and equivalence ratio of the air/fuel mixture have been extensively investigated. However, most of the studies available in the literature have been conducted with round burners. Very little work has been done on rectangular slots with different sets of jet-array geometrical and flow parameters. In particular, the combined effects of jet-array parameters such as jet orientations and jet-to-jet spacing on the combustion efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions are yet to be explored.
A row of three flame jets was chosen for the study because it provides the most basic arrangements commonly found in domestic and commercial cooktop burners. The configuration of a central jet with two side jets is similar to the situation of any jet in a jet array. The central jet experiences interference from its two neighboring jets and the effect can be used to characterize the behavior of any jet in a jet array except that at the free end, which is affected by its neighboring jet from one side only.
The combustion efficiency and gaseous emissions of a jet array depend on several geometrical and flow parameters. In this study the geometrical parameters chosen were: jet orientation, aspect ratio of jet, jet-to-jet spacing and jet-to-plate distance, and the flow parameters chosen are: Reynolds number and equivalence ratio of the air/fuel jets. To estimate the nonlinear relationships between the input factors and the response variables, one needs at least 3 levels for each input factors. Based on three levels of the six experimental factors (i.e. before replications or blocking), the number of experiments to be carried out according to the traditional one-factor-at-a-time approach would be 36, i.e. 729. To allow an estimate of the experimental error blocking might be needed and some runs would be replicated as necessary to augment the response surface design experiments. To enhance resources utilization, an efficient experimental design has been introduced in this study – the Response Surface Methodology. It is expected that before replications or blocking, a total of 91 experimental runs would be needed.
For this project the primary aim is to develop empirical models for predicting each of the above-mentioned combustion responses, with an emphasis on evaluating the individual and combined effects of all the jet-array and flow parameters. This would be achieved through the application of nonlinear regression and analysis of variance techniques. Another aim is to find thorough discriminant analysis whether the jet-array geometries and flow conditions under study might be divided into groups of distinct combustion attributes. The third aim is to characterize the response surfaces developed for the purpose of optimizing the conflicting responses simultaneously, viz. maximizing combustion efficiency and minimizing green house gas emissions. It is anticipated that findings of this project would prove useful for the sustainable design of gas-fired cooktop burners.
Impinging Premixed Flame Jet – Influence of Impingement Plate on Heat Transfer Characteristics

Abstract of the Project:
The PhD research project was conducted to investigate the material and mechanical properties of an impingement surface that would lead to rapid heat transfer rate and little material deformation under the action of a flame jet system. Experimental studies were performed to study the heat transfer characteristics of an impingement flame jet system consisting of a premixed butane/air circular flame jet impinging vertically upward upon a horizontal rectangular plate at laminar flow condition. The effectiveness of different roughened surfaces was investigated under different flame jet conditions, including a range of Reynolds number and equivalence ratio of the air/fuel jet and varying nozzle-to-plate distance. The investigation mainly focused on three aspects, viz. thermal conductivity, surface emissivity and surface roughness. The following photos show the experimental set-up and a typical flame appearance.
