BEng(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering

mode of study: Part-time (Last intake in 2017/18)

This programme provides a diverse up-to-date education in mechanical and related engineering. Technical study topics are carefully selected to reflect the urgent and potential needs of Hong Kong society and industry.

The use of high-performance computers and information technology in design activities is emphasised. Interdisciplinary studies are the norm for individual projects. Students acquire:

  • Know-how in traditional and emerging mechanical engineering activities such as environmental engineering;
  • Readiness to play a crucial role in any engineering or engineering-related business; and
  • Awareness of evolving technology and the ability to adapt to change.
  • Programme Features and Highlights

    Most importantly, this programme is closely related to the practical needs of the industry. A Group Project is carried out in the final year, in which students are tutored in multidisciplinary topics: many are environmental issues and current R&D problems in our industry, including those experienced by students’ own employers.

  • Entrance requirements
    • A Higher Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline; OR
    • An Associate Degree in Engineering; OR
    • An equivalent qualification.

    Short-listed applicants may be interviewed to determine their suitability. Genuine interest and need in the field with an employer’s support, relevant engineering experience and mathematics and language capability are important factors.

    There may be an admission test for short-listed applicants. The test content should include the following areas:

    The admission test content of programme 43491 is:
     Linear algebra: Matrices and determinants, vector spaces, elementary algebra of matrices.
     Ordinary differential equations: First and second order linear ordinary differential equations.
     Calculus and functions of several variables: Infinite series, power series, Fourier series, partial differentiation, maxima and minima.
     Geometry and Trigonometry.
