Short Description

Dr. Tin Yau Ng has received his PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Victoria in BC, Canada. His MASc thesis was focused on the prediction of thermoelastic behavior of multi-phase fiber-reinforced composites whereas the PhD dissertation extended the analysis from elasticity to elastoplasticity of multi-phase fiber-reinforced composites. Besides holding the PhD, MASc and BEng three degrees all in the area of mechanical engineering, Dr. Ng also holds two technical diplomas, one in civil engineering technology and the other in mechanical engineering technology.

Regarding to industrial experiences, Dr. Ng had worked in Air Canada, Redlen Crystal Ltd (crystal growth research company in Victoria, Canada), Quintette Operation Corporation (coal mine at the northern part of BC, Canada), Geowork Company Ltd (construction company in HK) as part of the engineering teams whose had involved in the design work and project management of the relevant projects.

Dr. Ng's major research interests and expertise include modeling of elastoplastic behavior of multi-phase fiber-reinforced composites, constitutive theory of solids and structural dynamics. The multidisciplinary aspect of my research has provided me with a unique perspective on the state-of-the-art research on theoretical and computational solid mechanics including micromechanics, nonlinear continuum mechanics and the finite element method. The applied aspects of his research in theoretical and computational mechanics have focused on the design and modeling of fiber-reinforced composite structures as lightweight materials have become important in the field of transportation, sports, and large-scale structures, to name a few. Furthermore, given the current global energy crisis and environmental issues, the design and optimization of novel composite materials and materials has become an important scientific and engineering issue to researchers and engineers.

During the period as a Postdoctoral research assistant, Dr. Ng developed a Window-based software called "CMM Software". CMM is the abbreviation of Computational MicroMechanics. The main function of this software is to predict the overall elastic properties of multi-phase fiber-reinforced composites provided that all the phase properties are given.

In the future, Dr. Ng would like to further the research and understanding in the area of computational solid mechanics and to integrate optimization techniques with structural mechanics to analyze solid mechanics problems.
