ME students wins 2nd Runner-up at IMechE Greater China Design Competition

A student team from the Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) won the Second Runner-up at the 6th Greater China Design Competition organized by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on 25-26 March 2017.

This year, the competition challenge was to design a lifting mechanism for mining industry handling and a total of eight teams from the Universities in Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou participated in this year’s competition.

The PolyU team, comprised of second year undergraduate students Lam Kah Cheng, Lee Wai Seng Stanley, and Go Stanley, under the supervision of Dr. Henry Chu and Ir Dr. Curtis Ng of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, have successfully designed and built a prototype design to lift the simulated ore up from the bottom and deposit into a receiving bin using available potential energy.

The panel of judges selected winners based on criteria including design innovation, design methodology, potential for commercialization, presentation skills, as well as the technical performance of the prototype design during the demonstration session.
