Mr ZHANG Kedi, student of BEng(Hons) in Product Analysis and Engineering Design, won “Red Dot: Best of the Best” at the prestigious Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2015, presented by the Red Dot Essen, Germany. The awarding ceremony was held on the evening of 25 September 2015 in Red Dot Design Museum, Singapore.
Identifying good design since 1950, the Red Dot Design Award received more than 4,680 applications from 61 countries in 2015. Making the competition one of the biggest and most prestigious design awards worldwide. In 2005, the award recognized the need to identify and celebrate new design concept and innovation, the precursor of tomorrow’s great product. Believing a design concept must be evaluated based on its design merit without prejudice, the award created an unprecedented platform that accept entries from companies to design students.
AromaSwan, the award-winning concept designed by Mr ZHANG and his teammate also from PolyU, is a culinary container created for accuracy and enjoyment when using liquid seasoning. Standing out from other culinary product concepts, the design wins The Red Dot: Best of the Best, which is reserved for the best works in a category for groundbreaking design.
Users can find volume markings on the neck of the liquid bottle, clearly indicating how much liquid will be pressed out each time. Prior to pressing out the seasoning, the user can set the exact amount of vinegar, soy sauce or olive oil they want by rotating the bottleneck. Only one hand is needed to complete the whole process. The rotation is smooth but the user would be able to hear a sound whenever the marking and the marker align and snap in place. The range of graduations varies with the size of the bottle, and choices of graduations are also available for selection.
