ME students excel in International Engineering Design Contest

A team of three BEng in Mechanical Engineering students, CHI Yuk-fung, NG Ka-kui and HAU Wing-yi Curie, led by Ir KK LO of Department of Mechanical Engineering has received the First Place Winner of the ASME Student Design Video Competition.

The team is required to design a set of four self-propelled devices which can collectively complete a relay race in the shortest period of time. Each device must contain an on-board energy source and trigger the motion on the next device. Bonuses will be awarded for devices having different energy sources and for initiating subsequent devices.

As the First Place Winner of the Student Design Video Competition, the team is invited to attend the Finals of the 2012 ASME Student Design Competition (SDC) held in conjunction with the 2012 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition (IMECE) in Houston, Texas, USA on November 9, 2012 - November 15, 2012. In Houston the team will be competing with more than 60 ASME Student Members from around the world who are expected to compete at the event.

The ASME Student Design Competition provides a platform for ASME Student Members to present their solutions to a range of design problems-– from everyday household tasks to groundbreaking space exploration. Each team is required to design, construct and operate a prototype meeting the requirements of an annually determined problem statement.

The Student Design Competition showcases the extraordinary talents of mechanical engineering students while encouraging them to develop innovative ideas towards an improved quality of life for all. Each year, several teams of up to four students compete at Student Professional Development Conferences in districts worldwide. Winners then proceed to finals at the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE). Cash prizes and awards are presented to winners at both district and final competitions.
