Department of Mechanical Engineering of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), Senior Citizen Home Safety Association and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (Hong Kong Branch) have jointly organized the "Design for Elderly Competition 2012” with enthusiastically supported by Education Bureau, Hong Kong Science Museum, The Hong Kong Technology Education Association and Electronics Technology Education Association (HK). The Final Round cum Prize Presentation Ceremony was concluded on 10 March 2012 at the Hong Kong Science Museum.
The objective of the Competition is to promote elderly caring and to develop an active learning spirit among the young generation. There are over 120 teams of secondary students, tertiary students and young engineers joining this competition to design user-friendly products for elderly.
A series of activities, such as visits to elderly home; workshops on product design; consultative meetings with social workers and carers of elderly, have been organized to provide participants a thorough concept of needs of elderly.
The Panel of Judges consisted of academics, social workers, engineers and elderly carers has selected 34 finalist teams to presented their designs in the Final Round of competition which was held at the Hong Kong Science Museum on 10 March 2012. One of PolyU Student teams won the Champion of Tertiary Students and Young Engineers group.
Positive feedback has been received from the community for achieving an ultimate goal of an enhanced mutual understanding between the elderly and the youth to create a harmonious society.
