Competition on Green Plastics to Promote Enviro-Protection

The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Fukutomi Company Limited co-organized a student competition, namely “Potential Applications of Green Plastics” to invite all PolyU undergraduate students to develop new products by reusing recycled plastics.  The Project Showcase cum Award Ceremony was just concluded on 20 April 2011 on PolyU campus.

The objective of this competition is to encourage students to use their creative thinking and technical mind-set to design high value-added and eco-friendly products by using those recycled, reused or biodegradable plastics and, ultimately, to advocate the environmental protection.

Through a series of training programmes organized by the Department from January to April, including knowledge sharing session -- “The use of plant-based fibre for plastic product development”, factory visit and design presentation, the activity stimulates students’ creativity and presentation skills.

There were total 13 teams of students joining the competition.  Their innovative projects were showcased on PolyU campus on 20 April 2011.  Panel of Judges was comprised of industrial partners from different sectors, such as engineering, design, government and academics.   Five awards - Champion, 1st runner-up, 2nd runner-up, The Most Creative Award and The Best Practicable Award - were presented to outstanding teams based on the criteria of creativity, technology, business relevance and presentation skills.

Dr. Steve Wong, Managing Director of Fukutomi Company Limited was impressed by the designed products and he commented that all designs are creative and most of them are ready to the market.
