Professor Chan Tat Leung has recently been elected a Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). With his distinguished engineering accomplishments, the ASME Board of Governors confers the Fellow grade of membership to Prof. Chan who is presently one of 3,519 Fellows out of 109,381 ASME members. The Fellow grade is truly a distinction among ASME members. He has become the second elected ASME Fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering following Chair Professor Wallace Leung.
Prof. Chan is an internationally recognized scholar for his outstanding contributions to basic and applied research and achievements in the mechanical engineering areas of thermofluids, combustion related pollutants, environmental sciences, energy & fuels, multiphase flow etc. In recognition of his outstanding research accomplishments, and exemplary leadership & management in academic programs and professional services in mechanical engineering, he was elected as Fellow of SAE International, USA, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, UK and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. He also received a prestigious National Honor, First Class Natural Science Award, bestowed by the Ministry of Education of China.
Prof. Chan joined HK PolyU in 1989. He proved to be a distinguished academic in teaching and research. In research area, he has secured various multi-disciplinary research funds locally and internationally. He has been leading a number of research projects in wide dimensions. His publications appear extensively in top-tier international journals.
In teaching aspect, Prof. Chan has extensive teaching experience in a wide range of subjects from sub-degree to postgraduate level. He is now Scheme Leader of BEng (Hons) Scheme in Mechanical Engineering and Deputy Director of Combustion & Pollution Control Research Centre. He has also served as Chairman of Board of Examiners and External Examiner for MPhil/EngD/PhD students.
His commitment and contribution not just in the institution, he played important roles to serve the field. He has served as Editor and Member of various journals and technical magazines, Member of International Conference/Symposium, Chairman & Honorary Advisor of Congress/Committee, assessor of professional assessment/membership in professional engineering institutions, etc. He has also served as Reviewer for many top-tier international journals over the years.
