PolyU is keen to establish collaboration initiatives with potential and existing partners in the Greater Bay Area and Mainland China to facilitate and boost high-impact research in the diverse area, aiming at integrating PolyU's domain knowledge and expertise with industry efforts and government support to facilitate disruptive technology development to transfer into applications for the society. 

Greater Bay Area - AI, Big Data and Network Communication

February 2020 - PolyU to establish strategic cooperation with Peng Cheng Laboratory
PolyU and Peng Cheng Laboratory (PCL) intend to jointly conduct research cooperation in the field of Big Data Analytics, Advanced Networks and IoT, AI and Robotics, Blockchains and Smart Health for the benefit of the national and social development. Apart from conducting scientific research projects, constructing and sharing research facilities and commercialization of the research findings, they will engage in academic exchange and promote talent cultivation.

December 2019 - PolyU, CASICloud and Altai Technologies to establish the Greater Bay Area Industrial Big Data Laboratory
PolyU & CASICloud and Altai Technologies signed a collaborative research agreement to establish the Greater Bay Area Industrial Big Data Laboratory with research facilities in both Hong Kong and Guangzhou. With the support of the industrial big data platform of CASICloud, the research lab shall spearhead research on industrial big data, artificial intelligence, industrial internet-of-things and industrial safety, as well as develop research talents in the Greater Bay Area.

July 2018 - PolyU joins the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Supercomputer Alliance
Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Supercomputer Alliance embraces the user organizations to foster the innovative application and development of supercomputer, and deepen the exchange and collaboration within the alliance. The Tianhe-2 supercomputer operated in National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou would be the major cooperation foundation to the advancement of the supercomputer application among the alliance members. The alliance members include Sun Yat-sen University, South China University of Technology, Jinan University, Guangdong University of Technology, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and University of Macau.

Dr. Terence Lau, Director of Innovation and Technology Development of PolyU participated in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Supercomputer Alliance inauguration ceremony held during the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance Presidents' Forum 2018.

In the Online Conference of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance for Space Science and Technology, members of the Alliance Committee including PolyU, nominated the director and the deputy director of the Alliance and discussed other issues related to the Alliance.

ITDO,  Professor Yu Changyuan from the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering of PolyU, and Dr. Fangxin (Frank) Zou, Assistant Professor of the Interdisciplinary Division of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering of PolyU were invited to join the “Academic Exchange and Development Planning" session. Dr. Zou presented the report of “A Highly Sensitive Nanocomposite Ultrasonic Sensor Fabricated from Polydopamine-Coated Carbon Nanotubes and Graphene”.

December 2018 - PolyU joins Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Space Science and Technology Alliance and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Ocean Technology Innovation Alliance
A total of 21 universities and institutions in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, including PolyU, joined the Alliances – an important initiative to harness the growing momentum of the nation’s development, and provide a robust talent pool and strong technical support for the national strategic development in areas of space and ocean.

October 2018 - Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area Rail Transit Joint Innovation Union
PolyU and Shenzhen University spearhead the establishment of the “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area Rail Transit Joint Innovation Union” (the Union) with 10 other universities and enterprises. By combining the research strengths of the collaborating parties, the Union aims to build an integrated rail transit system within “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay” through research and technological breakthroughs to cater to the tremendous needs of safe operations and maintenance of the rail transit in GBA.

May 2019 - PolyU joins the National Research Institute of Health and Medical Big Data of Sun Yat-sen University as a council unit
Chinese Health Information and Big Data Association and Sun Yat-sen University have established the National Research Institute of Health and Medical Big Data of Sun Yat-sen University in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to step forward the innovative cooperation among Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, to build a platform to share health data resources for research and applications.

PolyU as one of the Council members, was invited to attend the preparatory meeting for the establishment of the Council on 20 May, and the opening ceremony of the National Research Institute on 25 May, to jointly foster the development of research in health big data and application in the Greater Bay Area.

Greater Bay Area - Textile

June 2019 - PolyU - Wuyi University research collaboration in textile technology
PolyU and Wuyi University (WYU) signed a collaborative framework agreement to join hands for research on the development of green and healthy textile materials over a span of three years. The collaboration marks an important milestone of joint R&D effort between Hong Kong and Jiangmen – two major cities in the Greater Bay Area.

As one of the world's largest textile and garment production and consumption regions, the Mainland's growing demand for "green and healthy" textile has created a huge market potential for antibacterial and mildew resistant textiles. The collaboration aims to facilitate the experts from the two universities to innovate dyeing and finishing technologies for fabrics so as to address the health and environmental concerns associated with man-made fibers and their chemical processes. The research will also study the ingredients and methodologies to enhance the antibacterial, antimicrobial and antifungal performances in textiles.

November 2019 - A Food Safety Collaboration between PolyU and Bright Food to Advance Industry Food Safety Standard
PolyU signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Bright Food International Limited on food safety R&D collaboration in Shanghai on Nov 8 for food safety research and development, technology transfer and the intention to establish a joint research laboratory for food safety and technology innovation, based on each networks and resources for technology transfer into practical applications to support the advancement of food safety and quality to benefit a wider community.

The joint research laboratory is committed to the development and testing of agricultural and food innovation technologies, with at least five promising international projects for R&D each year for incubation and application.


November 2019 - PolyU and JITRI sign a Memorandum of Understanding to foster research collaboration
PolyU announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute (JITRI), witnessed by The Hon. Mrs Carrie LAM, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and WU Zhenglong, Governor of Jiangsu Province. The MoU offers a framework for research collaboration to develop basic research in science and technology, as well as for developing and implementing applied research projects in Jiangsu Province.

Held during the 2nd Jiangsu-Hong Kong Summit on Interconnected Development in Nanjing, the signing ceremony marks a milestone in joint research efforts between Hong Kong and Jiangsu. With the aim of commercialising high-level innovative technology outputs in global markets, basic research collaboration in a number of disciplines will be explored.

PolyU - Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute (JITRI) Collaborative Funding Scheme
JITRI sets up a fund pool of 20 million RMB (per year) for PolyU PI, to provide matching funding for JITRI specialized institute / JITRI institute spinoff company collaborative research projects. Focus area includes Materials and Energy Environmental Protection, Information Technology, Biotechnology and Medicine and Advanced Manufacturing. JITRI already has successful projects ongoing with PolyU PI.
