Dr Terence Lau has dedicated over 20 years in technology ventures in the development and commercialization of innovative biotechnological products in the area of genetic testing and molecular diagnostics. He started his career in a renowned Swiss-based multinational company, and was then involved in setting up biotechnology companies offering innovative products and services for clinical, food and veterinary applications in relevant industries. He directed the first laboratory in Asia to obtain ISO 17025 accreditation for qualitative and quantitative genetically modified organism (GMO) analysis in the early 2000s and has developed over a hundred products that are available globally. He also led the development of molecular avian influenza virus (AIV) detection products (including subtype H5) which were the first molecular AIV test kits that received official government regulatory approval (Japan).

Dr Lau joined The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) in 2013 as the Director of Innovation and Technology Development and Adjunct Professor at the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology. He oversees innovation and technology related strategic initiatives, promotes high-impact research and collaborations, management of PolyU's intellectual properties, and their translation and application through bridging the gap in technology readiness between academic inventions and real life applications. He established PolyU's Food Safety Consortium (FSC), a food safety stakeholder network and technology development platform with multinational and local corporate members. Led by Dr Lau, FSC is the first and currently the only entity from Hong Kong and Greater China to receive the Observer status at the United Nations FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission. He is also the founding Chairman and Board Member of the DISH Global Centre for Food Safety & Quality, a non-profit alliance between four economies to promote food related collaborations among EU - Hong Kong / China / Asia Pacific. At PolyU, Dr Lau has established a number of multidisciplinary collaborative platforms which facilitate better technology transfer while continuing his research in biotechnology.

Dr Lau actively contributes his knowledge and experience to various industry organizations and government departments. He is currently members of the Expert Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance and the Enterprise Support Scheme and was a member of the Small and Medium Enterprise Committee, the Working Group of IP Trade, the Small Enterprise Research Assistant Programme, the GMO (Control of Release) Expert Group of the HKSAR Government and many others. He was also an Advisor of the Infectious Disease Centre of Peking University, an Adjunct Investigator of the Jilin Academy of Agricultural Science, and a Senior Advisor to the United Nations Office for Project Services. He is currently a committee member of the National Committee on Biometrology of China.

Dr Lau has co-authored a number of peer-reviewed scientific articles, including those published in Lancet and New England Journal of Medicine, book chapters, and has been serving as a sector editor for an encyclopedia published by Springer Nature. He is the co-inventor of over 60 patents and has also co-developed five Chinese National Standards. Dr Lau received his research training at Indiana University (Bloomington) (Hong Kong Government Biotechnology Internship Programme) and Stanford University School of Medicine. He is the recipient of the Beijing Municipal Technology Award and Chinese Medical and Technological Award. Dr Lau received his B.Sc.(Hons) in Animal and Plant Biotechnology from The University of Hong Kong, M.Phil. in Biology from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and a Ph.D. in Physiology from Peking University.
