PolyU 80th Anniversary Lecture - Measuring Sustainability

Professor Richard Darton, (OBE FREng) from the Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford shared the concept of Sustainable Development with PolyU community. Sustainability indicators are key performance measures which keep track of our progress towards greater sustainability, informing both policy-makers and the wider public. The information presented by a set of indicators affects our perceptions and our decisions, so they must be chosen carefully. The Process Analysis Method of indicator selection (PAM) is based on an inventory of the system processes that give rise to sustainability impacts. The indicators characterize those impacts on the environmental, human/social and economic capital, and thus represent a form of triple bottom line accounting.
