ADVISORY BOARD & STEERING COMMITTEE
The FSC is steered by prominent members of the industry, academia and professional organizations to optimize its capability of advancing food safety with science and technology. Sub-committees encompassing various sectors will each be chaired by members of the Management Committee with the corresponding expertise:
Prof. Terence Lau has 20 years of experience on development and commercialization of innovative technologies and new enterprises. He started his career in a renowned multinational food company and then biotechnology startups offering innovative products and services including those for food and veterinary industry. He directed the first laboratory in Asia to be ISO17025 accredited for quantitative genetically modified organism analysis and has led the development of JMAFF-approved molecular avian influenza virus detection products. Prof. Lau has actively contributed his knowledge and experience to the Government and various organizations by serving as committee members and advisors including those related to SME development, intellectual properties, GMO (Control of Release) Ordinance, food testing and agricultural development, as well as establishing non-profit industry associations. He is also a member of National Committee of Biometrology, China, an Advisor of Infectious Disease Centre of Peking University and Adjunct Investigator of Jilin Academy of Agricultural Science. Prof. Lau has co-authored over 40 peer-reviewed scientific articles including those published in Lancet and NEJM, and is the co-inventor of over 60 patents, co-developer of 5 Chinese National Standards, and is also the recipient of Beijing Municipal Technology Award and Chinese Medical and Technological Award.
Prof. WT Wong obtained his BSc and MPhil from the University of Hong Kong (HK) and earned his PhD from the University of Cambridge (UK). He joined the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2009 and was appointed Dean of Faculty of Applied Science and Textiles in 2015. Prof. Wong’s research interests cover chemical sensing, lanthanide chemistry, nanomaterials and bio-imaging. He has published more than 450 research papers. His research accomplishment led him to a ScD from the University of Cambridge in 2000, a Croucher Senior Research Fellowship in 2002, and an Outstanding Achievement Award in Scientific Research for Institution of Higher Education of China in 2012. Prof. Wong actively contributes to the food industry as Director of PolyU FSTRC and advisory committee member for public bodies and the government, including Panel on Promoting Testing and Certification Services in Food Trade, HK Council for Testing and Certification (HKSAR), and Advisory Council on Food and Environmental Hygiene (HKSAR).

Professor Alexander Ping-kong Wai is the sixth President and Vice-Chancellor of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). Professor Wai was previously the Deputy President and Provost and Chair Professor of Optical Communications at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). During his 25 years at PolyU, he served in various university administration and leadership positions, from Head of Department and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering to Associate Vice-President and Vice President (Research Development). Professor Wai received a bachelor’s degree, majoring in Physics, from The University of Hong Kong in 1981, followed by a master’s degree and a doctoral degree in Physics from the University of Maryland, College Park in the US in 1985 and 1988 respectively. Before his time at PolyU, his research at the University of Maryland focused on fibre optic communication, and transoceanic transmission in particular. Early in his career, he joined the Science Applications International Corporation in the US where he worked as a research scientist on the Tethered Satellite System (TSS) mission, a joint USItaly Space Shuttle project. Professor Wai is known for his commitment to pioneering innovative technology and translational research, and for his outstanding contributions to education. While at PolyU, he made great strides in several important research areas, which included collaborating with world-renowned partners on international and national High-Speed Rail projects, lunar space exploration, and launching the Aviation Services Research Centre with Boeing Corporate to enhance Hong Kong’s position as a world-class aviation maintenance hub. He also drove the collaboration between PolyU and Britain’s Royal College of Art to establish a research laboratory that champions the integration of artificial intelligence and design. With academic interests in the field of optical fibre communications, Professor Wai has a rich array of impactful and patented research achievements to his name. He was elected as a Fellow of the Optical Society of America in 2009, a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (FHKIE) in 2010, a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2012, and a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences in 2012. With the approval of the State Ministry of Science and Technology, he has been selected for the “National Science and Technology Programmes Expert Database” since 2012. Professor Wai served as Chairman of the Society of Hong Kong Scholars between 2014 and 2018, and he was named President of the Council of The Hong Kong Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology in 2014/15. He served as a member of the University Grants Committee and a member of the Research Grants Council until January 2021.

Prof. Yuk-lam Lo focuses on the work related to biochemistry research. He has been holding several important positions of various science and technology research institutes, such as the Honorary Chairman of Hong Kong Biotechnology Organization, the Honorary President of Hong Kong Food Safety Association as well as the Consultant of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In April 2015, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Advisory Council of Food and Environmental Hygiene and Food and Health Bureau, Government Secretariat HKSAR. Prof. Lo also serves as the independent director of Sinovac Biotech Limited (NASDAQ: SVA), of CSPC Pharmaceutical Group Limited (HKG:1093), and of Luye Phama Group Limited (HKG:2186) respectively. In addition, he is an Adjunct Professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong as well as an Honorary Fellow at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Prof. Lo has dedicated himself to the advancement of science and technology in Hong Kong and China, all of these achievements won him the honor of the “Father of Biotechnology in Hong Kong.”
Mr. Yves Rey is a French citizen and a graduate of ENSAIA in Nancy, France. He has more than 42 years’ experience in world’s leading food, beverage and packaging companies in 10 different countries. He started his career in 1975 with Heineken in production and then joined Schweppes in 1982, first as Plant Manager and then as Operations Director. In 1991, he was appointed Technical Director of Coca-Cola. In 1994, he was appointed General Manager for Europe of McCain Sunnyland, before moving on in 1999 to become General Manager South Europe of Wipak Flexible Packaging. Yves joined Groupe Danone in 2003. He held the position of Corporate Quality General Manager and then since January 2015 he holds the position of senior advisor to DANONE’s board. Yves has been a longstanding member of the GFSI Board - from 2006 to 2011, as Vice-chair from 2008 to 2011 and as Chair from 2012 to 2014. Yves was on the board of Directors for SSAFE and is working closely with CFDA, AQSIQ and CNCA on the global harmonization of food safety requirements, with USDA and USFDA regarding food safety standards, with DG-Sanco in Europe on Food Fraud and with CODEX, FAO and OIE on harmonized food safety standards.
Prof. Jørgen Schlundt (JS) has a Veterinary Degree (DVM) as well as a Ph.D. in microbiology from Copenhagen University, Denmark. He has worked nationally and internationally on food science and food safety issues from 1983 to 1999, with a focus on microbiological risk assessment and the use of biotechnology in food. In 1999 – 2010 JS was Director of the Department of Food Safety and Zoonoses at the World Health Organization, Geneva, heading the WHO Food Standards Programme, hosting the Codex Alimentarius Commission. In 2011-2014 he was Director National Food Institute in Denmark, and has participated in the international development of food safety Risk analysis principles and has overseen the creation of the International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN) and the initiation of the estimation of the global burden of foodborne diseases. At NTU, JS continues his international activities, including as Chair of the Steering Committee of the Global Microbial Identifier, a new DNA-sequence-based system that will revolutionize microbiology.
