Programme Aims

The Scheme is designed to prepare students to become competent professionals with knowledge of the fashion business, including textiles, apparel, retail and related organizations. We aim at nurturing students for important roles in the development of the fashion and textiles industry both locally and internationally.

Upon successful completion of the programme, students should be able to:

  • Integrate and apply their knowledge of solving fashion design, technological and business problems;
  • Apply both general and specific knowledge and skills to, and demonstrate professional competence in, the functioning of the fashion business, and to excel in their endeavours in today's competitive environment;
  • Communicate effectively with professionals in the business;
  • Exercise enquiring, analytical, innovative and creative ability in responding to political, economic, social and technological changes in the global environment, and to create opportunities to develop business;
  • Deploy effective communication skills, interpersonal skills, and computer skills in their activities and in the competitive environment;
  • Initiate self-learning to become life-long learners, and to keep abreast of advances in their fields; and
  • Reflect a sense of social responsibility and consciousness.

Programme Characteristics

The Scheme provides a route for Higher Diploma/Associate Degree graduates in fashion and textiles to upgrade their specialised knowledge to the Honours degree level.

Programme Structure

The Scheme is designed to provide students with a specialised knowledge of textiles and clothing. The normal duration of study is four years, including mandatory summer terms, up to a maximum of eight years. Core Subjects that pertain to each specialism are offered in each semester, and Elective Subjects are also included to enrich the learning experience.

Language and Communication Requirements (LCR)

Professional Recognition

Graduates can apply for Associateship of the Textile Institute(ATI), and Graduate Membership of the Hong Kong Institution of Textile and Apparel (GHKITA).

  • A Higher Diploma or an Associate Degree in Fashion and Textile Studies or the equivalent.

Remarks

  1. Class arrangements
    Starting from 2015/16, our part-time degree programme (programme code: 14400) has been franchised to SPEED with a new programme code as 14460. Although the change, ITC is still the programme hosting department and the programme is leading to PolyU award. Most of the classes of 14460 programme will be held on PolyU Hung Hom Bay Campus and PolyU West Kowloon Campus except for subjects that require venues with special facilities in the main campus. 14460 students are entitled to use the services and facilities provided at the Hung Hom Bay and West Kowloon campuses.
  2. Subject Exemption
    14400/14460 students are required to complete 61 credits for graduation. 14400/14460 students can only apply for exemption from certain subject(s), rather than credit transfers, if they have successfully completed similar subject(s) in any Higher Diploma/ Associate Degree programmes. The exempted subject(s) will not be counted toward satisfying the total credit requirement, and students must take replacement subject(s) to make up for the number of credits.
  3. Four Specialisms
    The scheme consists of four specialisms of study; students must indicate their choice in their applications.
    - Fashion & Textile Design (Stream Code: PTD)
    - Fashion & Textile Marketing and Merchandising (Stream Code: PTM)
    - Fashion Retailing (Stream Code: PRE)
    - Fashion Technology (Stream Code: PTE)
  4. Foundation Subjects
    Foundation subjects must be taken if the candidate holds a Higher Diploma/ an Associate Degree (in textiles and fashion) that is not in the same specialism as that applied for.
  5. Programme Duration
    The duration may vary from a minimum of 4 years to a maximum of 8 years due to the self-paced mode of study.
