QS Higher Ed Summit: Asia Pacific 2023

The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Higher Ed Summit: Asia Pacific 2023 was held in Kuala Lumpur from 7 to 9 November, addressing the theme “Creating the right outcomes: Universities and the future of work in the Asia Pacific”. IPAO  colleagues, along with more than 1,000 academics and administrators from universities in the APAC region, participated in a series of conference activities which provided insights on how universities can increase student readiness for the ever-changing job market and societal needs. Our colleagues also enjoyed and benefitted from networking with delegates from other institutions and QS representatives.

Knowledge exchange with global experts at the THE Innovation and Impact Summit 2023

Prof. Christina WONG, Director of Research and Innovation and the IPAO team were excited to join the Times Higher Education (THE) Innovation and Impact Summit 2023 in Shenzhen on 7 November 2023.  The Summit, themed ‘Universities and cities: Advancing sustainable innovation’, explored how universities can create and sustain cities that are innovation hubs. Prof. WONG delivered an informative and insightful presentation which shed light on the importance of sustainability and how we can enhance cities’ resilience to better cope with the impact of climate change.

This prestigious recognition highlights Dr LENG’s outstanding achievements and advancements in science and technology innovation.

Three PolyU scholars win Science and Technology Innovation Prize

Three PolyU scholars has been bestowed the BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize (STIP) for their significant achievements in scientific and technological innovation and transformation in Hong Kong. Prof. Benny CHEUNG Chi-fai, Chair Professor of Ultra-precision Machining and Metrology, has won the STIP - Advanced Manufacturing, while Profs. Allen AU Man-ho and Daniel LUO Xiapu of the Department of Computing exceled in the Fintech field.

PolyU School of Hotel and Tourism Management Tops World Ranking

The School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has again excelled in the university rankings, claiming the top spot in the “Hospitality and Tourism Management” category of ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2023. This is the seventh consecutive year in which the SHTM has been recognised as the world’s number one by ShanghaiRanking, a globally respected institution. The School won first place in 2017, the first time ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects included the “Hospitality and Tourism Management” category, and has held the top spot ever since.

208 PolyU scholars ranked among world’s top 2% most-cited scientists

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) now has 208 scholars ranked among the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists in the newly released metrics compiled by Stanford University, surpassing last year’s record of 201 scholars, based on career-long impact. PolyU stands out globally with the largest representation of top scholars in the fields of Building and Construction (19 scholars) and Civil Engineering (13). It also demonstrates the strongest research performance in Hong Kong with the largest representation of top scholars in six specific fields. In addition to Building and Construction and Civil Engineering, it leads locally with the most top scholars in Energy (14), Operations Research (9), Optoelectronics and Photonics (9) and Nursing (7).

Outstanding Young Scholars2023

PolyU recognises outstanding young scholars and fosters creativity

The young generation is spearheading a new wave of innovations and technologies, serving as a growing force that will change our society in future. This year, six young PolyU researchers were honoured with the “PolyU Young Innovative Researcher Award” (YIRA) 2023 in recognition of their outstanding research endeavours in addressing global challenges. The prize presentation ceremony was held in early October.

EdTech Heroes Award

Two PolyU education technology projects receive EdTech Heroes Award

PolyU is committed to driving technology innovation by integrating technologies to its course curriculum and establishing artificial intelligence teaching and learning facilities, cultivating talents with technological and digital capabilities. The University’s efforts were recognised at the EdTech Heroes Award, where PolyU received the Grand Award (Higher Education) and the Learning Experience Award in Adult Learning Track. The Award is launched by a charitable organisation Esperanza in 2023, which aims to celebrate early adopters of education technology in Hong Kong.

Meeting the experts at the THE World Academic Summit 2023, Sydney

Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU, was invited to participate in a Presidents’ Forum at The University of Sydney on 25 September 2023.  At the Forum, presidents of universities from all over the world engaged in roundtable discussions on university leadership and controversial issues. President TENG, along with Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) and the IPAO team, led by Director Ms Karen JIANG, were excited to join the Times Higher Education (THE) World Academic Summit the next day. The Summit, themed ‘Collaborating for Greatness in a Multidisciplinary World’, brought together over 550 delegates from around 50 countries.  They explored the significant role universities can play in driving change within society through regional, national and global collaborations.

PolyU researchers awarded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China

PolyU has been recognised for its high-quality research through several awards from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Three research projects have been awarded under the NSFC’s Key Programme, eight research projects under the General Programme. Two PolyU researchers were awarded the prestigious Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macau) for their innovative work. In addition, 50 young researchers have been awarded the Young Scientists Fund.
