Meeting the experts at the THE World Academic Summit 2023, Sydney

Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU, was invited to participate in a Presidents’ Forum at The University of Sydney on 25 September 2023.  At the Forum, presidents of universities from all over the world engaged in roundtable discussions on university leadership and controversial issues. President TENG, along with Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) and the IPAO team, led by Director Ms Karen JIANG, were excited to join the Times Higher Education (THE) World Academic Summit the next day. The Summit, themed ‘Collaborating for Greatness in a Multidisciplinary World’, brought together over 550 delegates from around 50 countries.  They explored the significant role universities can play in driving change within society through regional, national and global collaborations.

PolyU researchers awarded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China

PolyU has been recognised for its high-quality research through several awards from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Three research projects have been awarded under the NSFC’s Key Programme, eight research projects under the General Programme. Two PolyU researchers were awarded the prestigious Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macau) for their innovative work. In addition, 50 young researchers have been awarded the Young Scientists Fund.

PolyU scholars honoured with national awards for contributions to China’s space missions

Congratulations to Prof. YUNG Kai-leung, Director of the University Research Centre for Deep Space Explorations (RCDSE) and Prof. WU Bo, Associate Director of RCDSE on receiving the Outstanding Award (Individual) for China’s Lunar Exploration Mission Chang’e-5 and Outstanding Award (Individual) for China’s First Mars Exploration Mission, respectively.   Presented by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China National Space Administration and four other ministries, the Awards recognise individuals and groups who have made distinguished contributions to the Nation’s lunar and Mars missions. The PolyU team’s contribution to the Chang’e-5 mission was also recognised with a group award.

Briefing on the QS Reputation Surveys Nomination Exercises for Ranking Year 2025

On 14 September 2023, IPAO organized a briefing session on QS Reputation Surveys nomination exercises, which was attended by around 60 academic staff and administrative colleagues. IPAO representatives provided an overview of the latest QS ranking methodology, demonstrated the impact of QS Reputation Surveys on academic departments and highlighted the streamlined procedures for nomination submission. It is expected that with the joint efforts and collaboration of faculties, schools, various academic and non-academic departments and IPAO, the University’s reputation will be fairly represented in the results of the QS Academic and Employer Reputation Surveys.

PolyU recognises six young researchers with the Young Innovative Researcher Award

The young generation is spearheading a new wave of innovations and technologies, as a growing force that will also change our perception of the future society. With the aim of encouraging and nurturing young scholars, PolyU held its first Young Innovative Researcher Award (YIRA) in 2022. In 2023, we honoured six outstanding young researchers with the YIRA Award as a tribute to their exceptional efforts and passion for scientific research.   The six young researchers are dedicated to scientific exploration to advance technology. Their innovative mindsets have expanded the research horizons in various fields, including renewable green energy, wearable medical rehabilitation devices, nanotechnology, soft materials in aid of visually impaired individuals, human-machine collaborative manufacturing system and information networks.

Connect with global experts at the Web of Science User Group Meeting 2023 and the National Taipei University of Technology

The Web of Science User Group Meeting 2023 took place on 11 August 2023 at the Sheraton Grand Taipei Hotel in Taiwan. Scholars, researchers, and experienced analysts in the field joined together to discuss the latest developments. They explored new possibilities for enhancing research and analysis possibilities utilising a range of data and analytics tools provided by Clarivate.  Mr Charles CHENG, Senior Manager of IPAO at PolyU, was invited to present real case studies on the effective utilisation of Clarivate’s data and analytics tools for strategic planning, reviewing local peer research output, analysing subject ranking, performance and identifying top journals. Additionally, participants had the opportunity to visit the National Taipei University of Technology. The visit provided a valuable opportunity to explore the university's cutting-edge facilities and research laboratories, gaining insights into the diverse research areas. It also facilitated the identification of potential collaboration.  A networking session was organised for representatives from various universities to engage in in-depth conversations on a wide range of research topics, fostering meaningful dialogue and possible future collaborations.

QS WUR 2024_THE Young Uni Rankings 2023

QS WUR 2024 and THE Young University Rankings 2023

PolyU has attained an encouraging result in the newly released Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2024, ranking 65th place globally amongst more than 1,500 institutions evaluated.   Institutions are ranked based on the analysis of 17.5 million academic papers and the expert opinions of over 240,000 academic faculty and employers. PolyU managed to improve its ranking indicators, such as “Academic Reputation”, “Citations per Faculty”, “International Staff”, and “International Students”. It also performed well in the new “Sustainability” indicator. These remarkable results reaffirm PolyU’s global leading position.
