15 Scholars recognised amongst world’s most highly cited researchers 2023, PolyU ranked third in Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and Clarivate Plc (Clarivate) jointly hosted the “2023 Highly Cited Researchers Awards Ceremony” on 15 March 2024. Officiated by PolyU Vice President (Research and Innovation), Prof. Christopher CHAO, and Clarivate™ Vice President for Asia Pacific (Academia and Government), Mr Osher GILINSKY, the Ceremony recognised PolyU academics who have been named as Highly Cited Researchers™ in 2023, the significant impact of their research and the positive contributions they have made in their field. A total of 6,849 researchers from 67 countries and regions from a diverse range of research fields were named as Highly Cited Researchers 2023. The most influential scholars from around the world have been identified, determined by the production of multiple highly cited papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and year in the Web of Science™ over the last 11 years. The inclusion of PolyU academics in this list is testament to the University’s pursuit of research excellence and its commitment to positive societal impact on various fronts. Prof. Chao delivered an opening address, saying, “PolyU is known for its commitment to impactful interdisciplinary research and innovation through various strategic initiatives, and the University has been consistently ranked in the list of top 100 universities globally. In the last year, we are proud to have had the third highest number of the world’s most Highly Cited Researchers in Hong Kong, including ten awardees in cross-field research, two from engineering disciplines, and one from chemistry, computer science and the social sciences respectively. These achievements reaffirm PolyU’s dedication to research excellence, and the devotion of our scholars to pursuing groundbreaking research that positively impacts society.” Clarivate Vice President for Greater China (Academia and Government) Mr Steven WANG, Clarivate Director Mr Alcome CHU, PolyU faculty deans, department heads and their delegates also joined the event to celebrate the achievements of the PolyU scholars. A webinar, “Highly Cited Researcher (HCR) Methodology Presentation and Experience Sharing”, was broadcast on the same day for PolyU faculty members. The webinar started with a presentation on HCR methodology by Clarivate Senior Consultant Dr Weiping YUE, followed by valuable insights shared by two HCRs from PolyU, namely Prof. Daniel LAU Shu-ping, Chair Professor of Nanomaterials and Prof. Jerry YAN Jinyue, Chair Professor of Energy and Buildings.

PolyU team wins distinguished award at QS Reimagine Education Awards 2023 by integrating technologies in teaching and learning

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) places a strong focus on technology in education and is committed to driving initiatives on teaching and learning innovations by developing interactive pedagogies. A cross-departmental PolyU team has won a Silver Award in the Asia Region at the QS Reimagine Awards 2023 with the project “Immersive Learning on the Run: Student-Staff Partnership for Technology-Facilitated Ubiquitous Learning”. PolyU is the only institution in Hong Kong to have won the Regional Award for Asia across all categories.

Croucher Tak Wah Mak Innovation Award 2023

PolyU outstanding scholar Dr Kathy K. Leng receives Croucher Tak Wah Mak Innovation Award 2023

Dr Kathy K. LENG, Assistant Professor of the Department of Applied Physics of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), has been honoured at the “Croucher Tak Wah Mak Innovation Awards 2023” in recognition of her outstanding achievements in material physics. Each Award provides funding of HK$5 million towards the winner’s research expenses. Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU, congratulated Dr Leng and said, “PolyU’s young scholars are dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in scientific research and intellectual expertise, and they have a strong international presence in diverse research areas. We are delighted to nurture a group of rising stars committed to scientific research and we will provide them with a full array of research resources to support their innovative endeavours.”

THE Campus Live UK&IE 2023

Prof. Christopher CHAO, PolyU Vice President of Research and Innovation and the IPAO team were pleased to join the Times Higher Education (THE) Campus Live UK&IE 2023 in Liverpool, UK, on 6 – 7 December 2023. Participating in a panel discussion titled “The New World of TNE: How to Navigate the Changing Landscape of International Partnerships”, Prof. CHAO shared insights into PolyU's current partnerships when organising dual degree programmes at both undergraduate and PhD levels with respected institutions from various countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia, Denmark and Poland. He emphasised the University's significant role in building bridges between the Nation and the wider world, particularly in the context of the Belt and Road Initiatives. Prof. CHAO also shared compelling success stories and implementation strategies, including the University’s adoption of a blended learning approach, implementation of its Internationalisation at Home initiative and integration of Service Learning into the curriculum. Additionally, he underscored the importance of collaboration, not only among universities but also with industry partners. These initiatives and insightful stories inspired peers from abroad and showcased PolyU's dedication to fostering innovation and promoting global education.
