This seminar will enable engineers to develop an understanding of the role of financial strategy in making decisions in investment, financing and resource allocation within an organisation. Through an interactive approach, this seminar will use case studies to examine the key principles and will highlight areas that those involved need to be alerted to.

Course Objectives

On completion of this seminar, participants should be able to:

  • explain the role and nature of financial strategy and its relationship to shareholders' value
  • identify the main elements of investment appraisal
  • evaluate long-term decision opportunities by using appropriate investment appraisal techniques
  • identify and evaluate the major sources of long-term finance available to an organisation
  • discuss the main methods of managing working capital and analyse working capital policies

  1. The Nature and Scope of Financial Strategy
    Financial strategy and organisational objectives.
  2. Investment Appraisal
    1. Evaluation of long-term investment opportunities using:
      1. net present value
      2. internal rate of return
      3. accounting rate of return
      4. payback period (including discounted payback period)
      5. profitability index
    2. Advantages and disadvantages of each appraisal technique
    3. Non-financial issues in investment appraisal
  3. Sources of Long-term Finance
    1. Key features of main sources of long-term finance, including:
      1. share capital
      2. loan capital
      3. leasing and hire purchase
      4. bank finance
      5. internal sources of finance
    2. Factors influencing choice of financing methods
  4. Working Capital Management
    1. Nature and importance of working capital management
    2. Methods employed to manage stock, debtors and cash
    3. Management of trade creditors and bank overdrafts
