The seminar held on 31 May 2019 (Friday) connected more than 200 business leaders, industry experts and professionals from Belt and Road countries.

The themed Panel Discussion ‘Hong Kong as a Gateway to the Belt and Road Countries: Perspectives from Regional Leaders’ gathered business leaders from key Belt and Road countries to share their views on Hong Kong’s role in the Belt and Road initiatives.

Bringing together stakeholders from a wide range of professions and expertise, the two sessions provided a perfect platform for participants to explore innovative ideas and stimulate forward-looking business collaboration.

Prof. Haitian Lu is the Associate Dean (External Relations and Development) at the Faculty of Business and Professor in law at the School of Accounting and Finance, Hong Kong Polytechnic University. During January to June 2016 he was visiting research professor at New York University Stern School of Business. He is also the deputy director of the Center for Economic Sustainability and Entrepreneurial Finance (CESEF) at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Prof. Lu obtained his Ph.D in law from National University of Singapore, Master of Law from Liverpool University and Bachelor of Law from Nanjing University. His teaching and research interest centers on the legal development, corporate governance, and corporate social responsibilities in Hong Kong and mainland China. He is the author / co-author of the books Secured Finance Law in China and Hong Kong (2010 Cambridge University Press), Truths and Half Truths: China’s Socio-Economic Reforms 1978-2010 (2011 Chandos Publishing), and The Role of China in Global Dirty Industry Migration (2008 Chandos Publishing). Prof. Lu published widely in law, finance, economics and management journals.

Prof. Lu contributes to the academic and professional society by serving as Associate Editor of China Venture Capital Journal; ad hoc reviewer for Management Science, Journal of Comparative Economics, Hong Kong Law Journal, Asian Journal of Comparative Law, International Review of Finance, China Finance Review, external subject reviewer for Tung Wah College, Chinese University of Hong Kong and Caritas Francis Hsu College; external expert member for PRC IQS Working Group of the Hong Kong Institute of Chartered Secretaries (HKICS); external examiner for Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountant (HKICPA); judge panel member for the Best Corporate Governance Disclosure Award 2012-2015, Faculty of Business Board Member, School’s Management and Ph.D EvaLuation Committee; Academic Board Member of Asian Competition Forum (ACF), Vice-president of the Hong Kong ALumni Association of Nanjing University, etc.

AJITH NIVARD CABRAAL was the 12th Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, from July 2006 to January 2015. He also functioned as:

  • Alternate Governor of the International Monetary Fund
  • Chairman of the South East Asian Central Banks (SEACEN) Board of Governors
  • Chairman of the SAARC Central Bank Governors Forum

During the period he served as Governor, he transformed the Sri Lankan economy to a safe and stable investment destination and a fast-growing middle income emerging market nation.  He also provided leadership to several heavily over-subscribed International Sovereign Bond issues. Under Governor Cabraal’s guidance, Sri Lanka was able to maintain sound and stable macro-economic fundamentals, with inflation being contained to low levels, and financial system stability being achieved in a time of severe global uncertainties and turmoil.

Cabraal was previously the Presidential Advisor on Economic Affairs and Secretary, Ministry of Plan Implementation, and closely associated in the development of the Policy Framework and Development Plan of the Government. Prior to his state appointments, Cabraal functioned as a Consultant specializing in Business Revival and Turnarounds, Planning and Corporate Governance. He has also served as the President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka, and the South Asian Federation of Accountants.  Cabraal was an Eisenhower Fellow in the year 2000 Multi-Nation Program, as well.

Governor Cabraal is the author of several books, including “Towards a Sri Lankan Renaissance”. He is a voracious reader, an eloquent speaker, and a person with many unique insights and experiences.

Heidi was admitted to practise as a solicitor in Hong Kong in 2002. She joined the firm in 2012.

Heidi heads the litigation and dispute resolution department and had served as the internal legal advisor of several Chinese banks.

She is strong in handling disputes involving companies, including but not limited to shareholder disputes, derivative actions, petitions relating to unfair prejudicial conduct, breach of fiduciary duties by directors or senior management. She acts for banks, financial institutions, listed companies, directors, management team, shareholders and investors in urgent applications regarding affairs of the company, holding of AGMs and EGMs, removal of directors or senior executives, misappropriation of assets, investigations relating to irregularities in corporate transactions and fraudulent conduct. She had acted in high profile and landmark cases such as Qunxing Paper Holdings Company Limited and China Metal Recycling (Holdings) Limited, involving investigations by the Securities and Futures Commission, winding-up petition, urgent injunction applications and appointment of receivers.

Heidi specializes in commercial litigation, arbitration and dispute resolution and frequently assists banks, borrowers, insurance companies, property management companies, funds, listed companies and financial institutions in resolving various vexatious problems. Heidi is experienced and adept at providing legal advice on asset tracing, mortgage litigation, corporate takeover, enforcement of judgments, winding-up of companies and bankruptcy.

Heidi is an arbitrator on the panel of The Law Society of Hong Kong, one of the few solicitors who got accreditation and listed on the panel. She is also an accredited mediator of Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, The Law Society of Hong Kong and a Panel Mediator for Buildings Management Cases of the Lands Tribunal, a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (U.K.) and a Civil Celebrant of Marriages. She is also a China Appointed Attesting Officer as appointed by the Ministry of Justice PRC. She has been appointed as Expert of professional Committee on Real Estate Arbitration of China Academy of Arbitration Law. She has been also appointed by The Honourable Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma, the Chief Justice of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal, as a Practising Solicitor Member of the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal Panel. She has also been appointed by the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as a member of Disciplinary Panel A of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

In addition, Heidi provides legal advisory services for cases adjudicated in mainland China, taking the role of an expert witness in Hong Kong law and is experienced in cross-border litigation and international arbitration. She regularly represents individuals and corporations to handle investigations and lawsuits conducted by enforcement agencies and regulatory organisations.

Heidi also specialises in handling matters relating to default of payment and commercial fraud, assisting liquidators, receivers, official receivers, creditors and other professionals in charge of insolvency and bankruptcy matters in relation to debt restructuring and cross-border asset tracing.

Heidi and her team have provided or are providing legal services to a number of banks, including Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Asia), China CITIC Bank International Limited, China Construction Bank (Asia), Bank of Communications Co., Ltd. Hong Kong Branch, Nanyang Commercial Bank, China Merchants Bank and Industrial Bank Co., Ltd.

Heidi is frequently invited to attend legal subject talks and seminars, to share her invaluable experience and views on commercial law, insolvency law, banking law, regulatory enforcement, arbitration, litigation and dispute resolution. She has been recognized as a Client Choice winner in Litigation practice in Hong Kong in 2016 which is organized by the International Law Office and Lexology.

Mr Michael Ross is from Hong Kong, China and obtained a Master degree in Science from University of Salford, United Kingdom in 1992. He graduated from Hong Kong Polytechnic (Now The Hong Kong Polytechnic University) with a Higher Diploma in Institutional Management and Catering Studies which was formerly under the Division of Business and Management Studies in 1989. Mr. Ross has also completed an Executive Program at the Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University in USA in 2009. Currently, he is participating in Tsinghua SEM Entrepreneur Fellows.

Mr Ross is currently serving as the Vice Chairman of Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group); Co-Chairman of CP Group’s Commercial Real Estate; and Vice Chairman of CP Lotus.

Mr. WANG Bing is the Deputy Chief Executive of Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, overseeing Global Corporate Banking Department, Commercial Banking Department, Institutional Business Department, Transaction Banking Department, as well as Custody and Trust Services. Prior to joining the Group, Mr. Wang served as General Manager of Jiangsu Branch of BOC. Since joining BOC in 1996, Mr. Wang has held management positions in various institutions including Suzhou, Ningbo and Jiangsu Branches. He served as Deputy General Manager of Jiangsu Branch and General Manager of Ningbo Branch, etc. He is innovative with sound professional capabilities in corporate banking as well as extensive business and management experience. Mr. Wang graduated from Soochow University with a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in English. He also obtained a Master’s Degree in Business Administration at the City University of London in the UK.
