Hotel ICON Topped Out

PolyU hailed the topping-out for the redevelopment of its former staff quarters Pak Sui Yuen in Tsimshatsui East on 11 March 2010. The new premises, which is scheduled for completion in late 2010, will be home to SHTM and a unique teaching and research hotel. With its distinct design and prominent location by the side of the Cross-Harbour Tunnel’s Kowloon entrance, the new infrastructure is set to become a new icon in the heart of the city.

UNWTO Secretary General Appointed PolyU Adjunct Professor

PolyU bestowed Adjunct Professorship on Dr Taleb Rifai, Secretary General of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), on 9 February 2010 in recognition of his valuable contribution to the development of the world’s tourism industry.

Community Development through Hospitality and Tourism in Kaiping

As part of its 30th anniversary celebrations, SHTM established a community programme with industry partners entitled “Community Development through Tourism and Hospitality”. Having assessed various communities in terms of their needs for tourism and tourism development, the School opted for Kaiping, a small community in Guangdong located between Guangzhou and Zhuhai.

Career Day 2010

The annual SHTM Career Day on 24 March provided information about employment opportunities for graduate students and placement opportunities for undergraduates in the hospitality industry. Thirty-two companies, including local organisations and international chains in hospitality, catering and tourism, set up exhibition booths, with eight of them providing career talks.
