Dr Thomas Bauer was invited to speak at the 2007 International Tourism Symposium and The 18th Academy of Korea Hospitality and Tourism Conference: Creative Leadership and Change of the Tourism Industry held in Seoul on 10-11 November 2007. Dr Bauer presented a paper titled: "Innovations and Challenges for the Hong Kong Tourism Industry".

Dr Thomas Bauer was the invited speaker at the First Regional Conference on Asia-Pacific Geoparks and Business Dialogue 2007 held in Langkwai, Malaysia, on 13-15 November 2007. Dr Bauer presented a paper titled "Business Opportunities in Natural Landscapes: Product Development, Marketing and Sustainability" and conducted a workshop on the role of stakeholders in enhancing global geoparks.

Professor Cathy Hsu and Dr Henry Tsai held a seminar on gaming management on 1 December 2007 for the National Development Initiatives Institute in Taipei , Taiwan . Professor Hsu spoke on “An Overall Assessment of Potential Gaming Development for Taiwan ” and Dr Tsai's topic was “Casino Ownership Structure and Financing” .

Professor Hsu and Dr Tsai also attended the International Casino Development Symposium held on 5 January 2008 in Kaohsiung , Taiwan . Professor Hsu discussed “Economic and Social Impact of Gaming Tourism” and Dr Tsai covered “Trends in the Casino Industry Development” .

The 6th Hong Kong Winter School was held on 21-26 January 2008. Distinguished speakers were invited to share with participants the following topics:

Professor Kaye Chon attended the ASEAN Tourism Forum on 22-25 January 2008 and spoke on “Development of Low-cost Carriers in Asia Pacific” . He also spoke on the “Latest MICE Market Trends and Developments” at the International Convention and Expo Summit (ICES) 2008, held on 14-16 February 2008 in Singapore .

Dr David Jones spoke on the topic “Asian Wave: The Service Difference” for managers and senior executives of the S-Group's Sokos Hotels from Finland on 26 January 2008 .

Professor Cathy Hsu was invited as a keynote speaker to the 18th Annual Council for Australian University Tourism and Hospitality Education (CAUTHE) Conference held on the Gold Coast on 11-14 February 2008. She delivered a speech on “Tourism and Hospitality Education: Critical Issues in a Changing Industry Context”.

A group of academic and administrative staff of the Guilin Institute of Tourism visited PolyU in the first week of March 2008. Dr Andrew Chan, Dr Catherine Cheung, Dr Henry Tsai, Dr Ada Lo, Dr Mei Ng, Mr Paul Penfold and Mr Tony Tse discussed with the academic staff on subjects such as programme design and development, lesson planning, marketing and hotel English, etc. The group also had a chance to observe the classes of Dr Jack Kivela and Ms Candy Tang. The administrative staff met with SHTM's senior administrative staff members and PolyU's Academic Secretariat to discuss about recruitment, selection and management of programmes .

Mr Alexander Grunewald , SHTM PhD research student, spoke together with two representatives from Michigan State University and Lausanne University in the panel “The Hotel Leaders 2028” at the International Hotel Investment Forum in Berlin on 3-5 March 2008.

SHTM will co -organise the Fourth International Forum on Chinese Outbound Tourism (IFCOT) 2008 to be held in Beijing on 16 April. IFCOT 2008 will be themed around "Approaching the Destination" , and the latest trends and issues in the China outbound market will be discussed in the forum.

The second International Forum on China Hotel Brand Development is being organised by the SHTM and Sun Yat-sen University , and will be held in Guangzhou on 9-10 May 2008. Many well-respected speakers have already confirmed their participation in the Forum. Please mark down the dates; we hope to see you there!
