Storytelling is a powerful way of exploring, linking and crafting values, articulating them is such a way as to unlock agency and recognise the political actor within every researcher. In this conference we seek to share and co-create tourism stories through which we learn, and that will lead us towards sustainable, caring and ethical change making in tourism. This conference incorporates a "Next Generation Tourism Leadership forum" and a "Lost in Translation" workshop to empower non-English as a first language tourism scholars.

Chris Ryan

  • Chris continues to edit Tourism Management and Tourism Management Perspectives, but it is possible that by the time of the next newsletter the latter journal will be in the hands of a new editorial team. In addition to looking after the 1400 and 1500 annual submissions Christ has been busy in other directions. The China-New Zealand Tourism Research Unit continues to be research active and with Chen Hui from Xi'an International Studies University the two are now undertaking visitor monitoring at the Terracotta Warriors Museum with the support of Director Hong from the museum. After the last IAST Conference Christ travelled to the Fuxi Mausoleum in Ruyang, Henan, and with Dr.Zhang Xiaoyu from Beijing Union University an agreement was made with the Tourism Administration and the Mausoleum Directorate that similar research can be undertaken at this site. While less globally known, the Mausoleum is of great significance in China as the semi-historical and mythological Fuxi was responsible for the embryonic birth of Chinese culture and is linked to the I-Ching.
  • Apart from that Chris has again published various articles including one on hiking by Chinese hikers in Ninbo. In 2017 he also won an award for the best research book from Emerald Publishing for the book, Social Conflic and Harmony: Tourism in China's multi-ethnic communities completed with Yang Jingjing (Surrey University) and Zhang Lingyan (Beijing Union University). This book is about ethnic minorities in Kanas, Jingjiang Province, which Chris visited with the UNWTO INSTO observatory based at Sun Yat Sen University.
  • Finally, for his sins, Chris has a responsibility for aiding colleagues at the Waikato Management School in preparing portfolios for the five year research assessment exercise undertaken in New Zealand. This differs from similar exercises in the UK and Australia in that each individual lecturer is assessed and graded on a four point scale that ranges from having published research of an 'international standard' to being deemed to be 'research inactive' at the other end of the scale.
