David Airey

In the four days before the Academy's biennial conference held in Rhodes in May, eight Academy Fellows joined with five Greek counterparts in a workshop for tourism specialists in the region. The Workshop titled "Managing Tourism After the Crisis - a Mediterranean Perspective" dealt with five main themes: the markets and marketing; human resources and education; developing the destination; competitiveness; and economic contributions. Most of the 25 attendees at the Workshop were from the Eastern Mediterranean area representing the public and private sectors of tourism. The fellows: David Airey, Tom Baum, Dimitrios Buhalis, Geoff Crouch, Larry Dwyer, Alison Gill, Alastair Morrison and Pauline Sheldon are shown in the photograph with the participants and some of the Greek counterparts, including the host for the Academy Conference, Andreas Papatheodorou, of the Laboratory for Tourism Research and Studies of the University of the Aegean.

Tom Baum

Released from the pressures of Second Vice-Presidentship of the Academy, Tom can now focus on his Newton Fund grant to research tourism employment in the SMART city. This two year study, in partnership with the Asian Institute of Tourism in the University of the Philippines, will use big data relating to a range of socio-economic indicators to inform strategic thinking about tourism employment in major cities of the future. This pilot will focus on Glasgow and Manila but the intended outcome is an approach to tourism workforce planning that has applicability in any major tourism city.

Dimitrios Buhalis

Dimitrios is organizing and chairing these events:

Chris Ryan

Chris was recently back in China undertaking an assessment of Changshu City's tourism application for membership of the UNWTO Sustainable Tourism Project. Additionally, following his report for Xishuangbanna in 2014 he was invited back to Jinghong and the first Maori-Chinese Indigenous Tourism Conference took place under the auspices of UNWTO and Sun Yat Sen University with the second to occur in Kanas in 2016. He also revisited Huangshan and witnessed the significant changes in the area since his last visit just 7 years previously. Compared to his very first visit almost too many years ago - it would be difficult to recognize the area even though some villages like Xidi and Hungcun are in outward appearance similar.  The new BMWs are not!

Geoff Wall

The University of Waterloo has accorded the title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus to Geoff Wall of the Department of Geography and Environmental Management. The title has been assigned in recognition of his "distinguished career and contributions to the University of Waterloo… important contributions as a tourism scholar of international repute … considerable impact as a mentor to many prominent scholars and as a consultant to national and international agencies".

Also, Geoff's Visiting Professorship with the Chinese Academy of Sciences has been renewed. Following the successful nomination of Tianshan as a World Heritage site by UNESCO last year, Geoff's main task will be to assist in the preparation of the nomination documents for the Altai Mountains. The mountains cross Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia, as well as China, making this a particularly challenging case.
