Kaye Chon

Kaye was named Walter Kwok Foundation Professor in International Hospitality Management at Hong Kong Polytechnic University while he will continue to serve as Dean of School of Hotel & Tourism Management. He was honoured with the 2014 Robinson Alumni Global Business Award from his Alma Mater, J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University, for his distinguished career achievements and community services.

Larry Dwyer

Larry Dwyer was invited to give keynote addresses at two conferences:

Eduardo Fayos Sola

In January, Academy Fellows David Airey, Don Hawkins, and Jafar Jafari joined Eduardo in Madrid to celebrate the latter's award of the UNWTO Ulysses Prize for Excellence in the Creation and Dissemination of Knowledge.  Eduardo becomes the 11th recipient of the prize award.  While they were in Madrid they also took part in a Symposium organised by UNWTO during which Eduardo, as the 2014 UNWTO Ulysses Laureate prize winner, discussed a range of issues facing the future of tourism, supported by the other three.  They then all took part in the award ceremony itself where the Secretary General, Taleb Rifai, made the presentation and Eduardo gave his acceptance speech to a distinguished audience that included the Secretary of State for Tourism in Spain and that was streamed to many other parts of the world.

 


 

Douglas Frechtling

Doug presented a keynote address at the UNWTO Special Workshop on Tourism Statistics in Nara, Japan, November 20-21 2015.  The workshop focused on the measurement of tourism for policy purposes, for sustainable tourism, and for developing the Tourism Satellite Account.  His presentation, "From Tourism Statistics to Tourism Policy and Back Again," stressed the roles of evidence-based research in the tourism policy development process, and how this process should shape tourism statistics programs.  This workshop, along with the 13th Annual OECD Global Forum on Tourism Statistics earlier in the week, comprised "Nara Tourism Week," celebrated with banners throughout the city.

 


 

Brian King

Brian was a keynote speaker in Bandung, Indonesia in October 2014 and addressed the topic "the Resort Concept in the Asia Pacific Region: development and Sustainability" at the International Seminar "Eco-resort and Destination Sustainability" hosted by the Indonesia University of Education.

He was a plenary presenter in Darwin, Australia in November 2014 on the topic "Global partnerships: encouraging student & staff mobility partnerships" at the THE-ICE (International Centre of Excellence for Tourism & Hospitality Education), Panel of Experts hosted by Charles Darwin University.

He has been appointed to an Adjunct Professorship at Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia. Brian spent many years at Victoria University prior to taking up his current and substantive role at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Bob McKercher

  • Bob was invited to be the keynote speaker at the Mahidol University International College Conference on Tourism and Business.
  • He was a visiting scholar at the University of Queensland during the (northern) spring of 2015.
  • His 2nd edition of the book "Cultural Tourism" has recently been published.

 

 


 

Douglas Pearce

Doug has just retired as professor of tourism management at Victoria University of Wellington.  However he retains his interest in tourism research and will be spending time in Chile later in the year as a visiting professor at the Universidad Austral de Valdivia.  Meanwhile, he is brushing up on his Spanish.

 


 

Philip Pearce

At a well attended and focused conference in Perth Western Australia in November, Philip became the new President of ITSA, the International Tourism Studies Association. ITSA has the goal and already some achievements in connecting scholars from developing and developed countries, most immediately involving those from Asia and the western world.

Philip and Anja Pabel expect their book 'Tourism and Humour' to be available in June 2015; publisher Channel View.

Contact with other Academy scholars has been possible though enjoyable team work with Cathy Hsu in Hong Kong and the chance to meet fellow scholars there. Additionally at CAUTHE in February, Philip presented papers on humour Chinese tourists motivation, and was the Academy fellow participating in the national tourism education workshop on Setting the Standards for tourism courses. He hopes to be at the Forum in Naples in May and attend the Academy conference in Greece.

 


 

Chris Ryan

Chris organised the 2014 New Zealand Tourism and Hospitality Research Conference in Hamilton, New Zealand and during his introduction noted that it was 20 years since he had commenced the series in 1994 at Massey University.

Among those attending were Rick Perdue and Bao Jigang from the Academy, and with a theme based on the Asia Pacific about 50% of the delegates came from Asia. At the conference Chris thanked Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Siam University and National Kaohsiung University for their sponsorship.

Chris has also undertaken some research for one of New Zealand's major tourism companies, namely Tourism Holdings. He also organised seminars in Mandarin for Chinese speaking post graduate students on research methods.

For 2015 he will again be visiting China and on one trip will be taking Maori colleagues for discussions with members of China's ethnic minorities as to intellectual property and indigenous rights in tourism.

Tej Vir Singh

Tej Vir has recently signed an agreement with Channel View Publication, UK to publish his edited book "Challenges in Tourism Research". The book will be possibly out by August 2015. He has also been appointed as one of the associate editors of Jafar Jafari and Honggen Xiao edited Encyclopaedia of Tourism, to be published by Springer in 2015.

In March 2014, Tej Vir had delivered a keynote on 'Tourism: A Few Footsteps into the Future' at the International Conference on 'Tourism Milestones: Preparing for Tomorrow'. The conference was organized by Skyline University College , Sharjah.

 


 

David Weaver

Allan Williams

Allan, together with his Surrey colleagues, Dr. Gang Li and Dr. Hannia Janta, has been awarded an EU Horizon 2020 grant of 351,000 euros to undertake a study of the role of youth mobility in the transition from youth to adulthood. The project combines large scale panel surveys, interviews with migrants and non-migrants, and laboratory based experimental research that investigate future mobility intentions. The Surrey team is part of a 10 member European consortium that has been awarded 2.5 million euros for the three year study.
