Chris Ryan

In November and December 2013 Chris spent 7 weeks in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.  He met with Academy colleagues including Kaye Chon at Hong Kong Polytechnic University where he gave a presentation (without Powerpoint), and additionally gave presentations at a number of universities including Sun Yat Sen University, Ankgang University, South China Normal University, Beijing Union University, Xi'an International Studies University, Zhejiang International Studies University, Asia University, and National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism.

He was invited to take up visiting professorships at some of these universities, and the accompanying photographs show him with members of the Shaanxi Tourism Research Institute based in Xi'an.

and with colleagues from Sun Yat Sen University, from left to right, Dr. Xingyuan (Roy) Zhao, Professor Jingyan Liu, Chris and Associate Director Assoc Fu Hui.

Research outputs are already emerging from these visits and being submitted to various journals.

The last part of 2013 also saw Chris generating reports for the Tourism Industry Association New Zealand and Tourism New Zealand.

In December 2014 Chris is organising the 11th New Zealand Tourism and Hospitality Research Conference in Hamilton, New Zealand - 20 years after he organised the first such conference at Massey University in 1994 (the conference is held once every two years).  The keynote speaker is Professor Bao Jingang from Sun Yat Sen University, while Andrew Johns from Tourism New Zealand is the second such speaker. Andrew is responsible for the negotiations that relate to the Approved Destination Status that New Zealand has with China.

The conference theme is tourism in the Asia Pacific, and in April 2014 Chris is involved in a symposium on Halal Tourism at his university which will also include representatives from Malaysia and Indonesia. Former Academy member Professor Mike Hall is also involved as is the Federation of Islamic Associations in New Zealand. New Zealand government representation will also be present.

2014 hence promises to be as full as 2013 says Chris, but with the Sword of Damocles (otherwise known as research assessments exercises) hanging over his head, his priority for 2014 has to be academic writing!
