Effective Training in Hospitality

13-14 December 2017 (Wednesday, Thursday)

Dr Frederic Mayo

Principal, Mayo Consulting Services Inc.
Clinical Professor of Hospitality and Tourism Management, New York University

Developing and retaining talented and dedicated staff members has been a continuing challenge for managers in the field of hospitality. Once good employees have been found and oriented, keeping them focused and productive becomes a matter of training – both to keep them motivated and challenged as well as to prepare them for advancement. In these two days, you will learn to design and implement training programs that inspire and involve participants. Topics will include: experiential learning, workshop design, instructional objectives, platform skills, sequencing learning, group dynamics, and evaluation strategies. In addition, you will participate in and learn to start and end training events, use small groups to engage trainees, and apply a range of ways to explain information and skills. The two days will involve you in active learning and reflection on your participation.

By the end of the two days, you should be able to:

  • Prepare an assessment of training needs

  • Write appropriate instructional objectives

  • Design effective training activities

  • Use a broad range of training strategies

  • Evaluate training designs and events
