Seminar on "Safety in Tunnelling Using Drill-and-blast Method"

The Health, Safety and Environment Office and The Hong Kong Occupational Safety & Health Association will co-organize a safety seminar on "Safety in Tunnelling Using Drill-and-blast Method".

Speaker:
Mr K Y Chow is a civil engineer with 30 years experience gained in the Hong Kong, China and Taiwan construction industry. He has worked on many different civil-engineering projects in Hong Kong in the capacity of engineer, site agent, safety manager, environmental and quality-assurance manager, quarry manager, deputy project director, blasting manager and executive consultant.

 

Mr. Chow is a Member of many professional bodies in Hong Kong, USA and Europe including Fellow of the HK Society of Blasting Engineering and Explosives Technology, a Member of the Institute of Explosives Engineers, Institute of Quarrying, UK; International Society of Explosives Engineers, USA and is a qualified shotfirer. Mr Chow has 30-year experience in blasting in site formation and tunneling works in Hong Kong. He is responsible for blasting works at DSD Upgrading Works at Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works and previously for DSD Tsuen Wan Drainage Tunnel; MTRC Express Rail Link Tunnels; DSD Lai Chi Kok Transfer Scheme; Eagle’s Nest Tunnels; BP’s Zhuhai LPG Cavern; Aqueducts between Tai Po and Butterfly Valley; Explosives Complex at Kau Shat Wan; Routes 3Lantau Fixed Crossing; Tseung Kwan O Areas 48, 59; Texaco Road / Tsuen Wan Bypass; Lam Tin South Areas I & II; Junk Bay Tunnels; Shek O Quarry and Castle Peak Power Station.

 

Abstract:
This presentation will highlight safety issues in the use of drill-and-blast method for tunnelling, for example, the current explosives handling practice, supervision, requirements of protective & precautionary measures and the role of safety personnel in the context.
