Faculty of Humanities

Faculty of Humanities of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is among the youngest humanities faculties in Hong Kong.  Dedicated to creating synergies among language, culture, and science in education and research, the Faculty focuses on the application of knowledge and skills. The Faculty is a leading tertiary education provider in Greater China and Asia in the fields of applied language sciences, intercultural communication, and Chinese culture studies. Gaining strength in areas such as speech therapy and healthcare communication, the Faculty is emerging as a leader in applied language sciences and bilingual China studies in the Asia Pacific region. We place emphasis on interdisciplinary research through collaborations with internal and external partners.

According to Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) University Rankings, the Faculty is ranked among top 30 in Asia in 2014. In the subject of “Linguistics”, the discipline to which the majority of our staff members belong, the Faculty is ranked 35th in the world and 8th in Asia in 2015. We are also recognized internationally through our strong academic links. We have established joint research centres with Peking University, Tsinghua University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Zhejiang University and University of Technology, Sydney, as well as exchange programmes with other leading universities in the world.

Our programmes equip students with the knowledge and practical application abilities essential in a wide range of professions. Situated in the culturally stimulating urban context of Hong Kong, the Faculty offers both the study of Chinese or English language on its own and the training of multilingual and intercultural competency. We also offer Chinese culture programmes covering Chinese Literature, Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy, Chinese Religion and Chinese Art. Our programmes are designed to meet the needs of the knowledge-based and technology-intensive society and prepare students for their careers in the Greater China region or the wider international context, as well as to empower them to make a meaningful contribution to the global community.

The Faculty has more than 200 academic and teaching staff from all over the world. We produce world-leading and high impact research in areas including Chinese history and cultures, linguistics and language studies, translation and other humanities areas. We aim for excellence in research by building upon interdisciplinary synergies.
