RISE Youth Leadership Programme
RISE (Responsibility, Impact towards others, Serving heart, Empowerment) is a one-semester intensive leadership training offered to UGC-funded undergraduate local and exchange students in PolyU. It pilots a leadership education structure that embraces peer-learning through team building orientation and camp, classroom learning and experiential workshops on social issues, service leadership, liberal studies, and cultural competence; it concludes with a 2-week international study cum service trip which embodies the aspirations of global visions and serving hearts.
The non-credit bearing first and second cohorts of RISE took about 100 students of over ten nationalities throughout the journey on sharing economy/social innovation and all cognitive, emotional, and cultural trainings and workshops. They travelled to the Sharing City – Seoul, South Korea and visited the well-developed social innovations, cooperatives etc. The visits and dialogues with local social innovators opened their eyes and cultivated their beliefs of development alternatives. The students also served in both Seoul and Mokpo (southern part of South Korea) in partnership with Ewha Womans University and Mokpo National University. The services to children and elderly in both city and rural areas unveiled to the students the different sides of a country beyond distant views solely from social platforms and media, and prepared the students with empathy and skills to pay it forward to the community. In addition, the two partnered universities organised lectures and dialogues with professors and experts, and mobilised around 50 students in total for the two cohorts.
RISE (3rd Cohort) is a one-semester credit-bearing leadership programme which is embedded with the three-credit service-learning subject APSS2S09 Service Leadership through Serving Children and Families with Special Needs in 2017-18. This cohort covers a peer-learning and team-building adventure camp, lectures on Service Leadership, workshops on cultural competence and service project planning etc. during Semester 2; while in May, the forty five students will go to Vietnam for local studies and service at Ho Chi Minh City and An Giang Province in Semester 3. In Vietnam, RISE collaborates with Vietnam National University and An Giang University for service-learning and understanding of the social and post-war situations of the country.
