PolyU invites applications from incoming visiting full-time PhD students in any discipline. We have established a global network with about 280 overseas universities/institutions spanning 39 countries and regions. We have close to 440 academic collaboration agreements, ranging from student exchange arrangement to joint research collaboration.
Call for applications
Two rounds of applications are issued each year: one in September/October and the other in March/April.
Starting from the 2nd round of 2021/22, Research Student Attachment Programme is a scheme with two sub-programmes:
A. Research Student Attachment Programme (Internationalization)
B. Top Research Institutions Attachment Programme
* PolyU has also engaged in a collaboration with Zhejiang University (ZJU) to offer a Special Funding Scheme (SFS) under Programme B. ZJU students from Faculty of Business are eligible to participate in SFS.
Selection criteria of Research Student Attachment Programme (Internationalization)
Full-time PhD students whose home institutions in overseas excluding Chinese Mainland, Macau, and Taiwan are applicable. Applicants shall have good academic results and find a PolyU supervisor who has common research area with the students.
Selection criteria of Top Research Institutions Attachment Programme
Full-time PhD students from all over the world including Chinese Mainland, Macau, and Taiwan whose home institutions are top universities/labs/industries are applicable. Applicants should provide evidence to support that the home institution is a top university/lab/industry in respective disciplines. Applicants shall have good academic results and find a PolyU supervisor who has common research area with the students.
All applicants are required to submit the following documents:
- copies of transcripts, certificates of degree, and other supporting documents, e.g. publication records (if documents are not printed in English or Chinese, they must be accompanied by a certified English translation)
- a supporting letter (information such as name of the student, name of the home supervisor(s) and visiting period should be specified in the supporting letter. The supporting letter can be prepared by student’s home supervisor or the affiliated department/faculty)
- a brief CV with a list of representative publications of the home supervisor(s)
Applications will be assessed by a selection committee.
Starting from the 2nd round of 2021/22, incoming research students will be provided with a financial support of HK$12,000/month (a daily rate of HK$400) for a maximum of six months. Incoming visiting PhD students will not be required to pay tuition fees at PolyU. However, they will continue to pay tuition fees, if applicable, to their home institutions.
Incoming applicants can make their own accommodation arrangements or apply for lodging in PolyU’s student halls. However, the lodging period is from December of the current year to July of the following year. Applications for lodging in the PolyU student halls during the peak period from August to November will not be entertained. During the peak period, incoming applicants have to make their own accommodation arrangements in Hong Kong.
