Research Student Attachment Programme (for Outgoing Visiting Students)

The University agreed to support Research Student Attachment Programme for full-time PolyU PhD students.

Call for applications 
Two rounds of applications are issued each year: one in September/October and the other in March/April.

Selection criteria
Starting from the 2nd round of 2021/22, Research Student Attachment Programme is a scheme with two sub-programmes:

A. Research Student Attachment Programme (Internationalization)
B. Top Research Institutions Attachment Programme

* PolyU has also engaged in a collaboration with Zhejiang University (ZJU) to offer a Special Funding Scheme (SFS) under Programme B. PolyU students from Faculty of Business, Faculty of Construction and Environment, and School of Hotel and Tourism Management who will pay a visit to ZJU are eligible to participate in SFS.

Selection criteria of Research Student Attachment Programme (Internationalization)
Full-time PhD students whose host institutions can enhance students’ global vision and exposure to a new environment other than hometowns are applicable. Students are not encouraged to go back to the country/region where he/she was admitted. Applicants shall have good academic results and find a host supervisor who has common research area with the students.

Selection criteria of Top Research Institutions Attachment Programme
Full-time PhD students whose host institutions are top universities/labs/industries are applicable. Applicants should provide evidence to support that the host institution is a top university/lab/industry in respective disciplines. Students can also go back to the country/region where he/she was admitted as long as the host institutions are top universities/labs/industries. Applicants shall have good academic results and find a host supervisor who has common research area with the students.

All applicants are required to submit the following documents:

  • an invitation letter (information such as name of the PhD student, name of the host supervisor(s), and visiting period should be specified in the invitation letter. The invitation letter can be prepared by student’s host supervisor or the affiliated department/faculty.)
  • a brief CV with a list of representative publications of the host supervisor(s)

Students who have not had their registration confirmed may be given a conditional offer to undertake the attachment programme. If they cannot have their registration confirmed before the commencement of the attachment programme, the conditional offer would lapse.

Awardees of the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme are reminded to note that “If an awardee stays outside Hong Kong for academic/research activity for an aggregate period exceeding 90 consecutive days, or an aggregate of 183 days, the stipend will be suspended immediately unless prior approval by the RGC has been given upon provision of strong justification by the affiliated university.” (Ref. Paragraph 10 of Terms and Conditions of Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme)

Selection Process
Applications will be assessed by a selection committee.

Financial support
Successful applicants will continue to receive stipend, if applicable. Travel expenses will normally be supported based on the actual amount spent on going to and returning from the host institution only and will be capped at HK$10,000. Starting from the 2nd round of 2021/22, a monthly subsistence allowance of HK$7,500 (a daily rate of HK$250) will be granted and the total amount for each PhD student will be capped at HK$45,000, i.e., support for a maximum of six months only. Students will continue to pay tuition fees, if applicable, as required by PolyU.

Visa and Accommodation arrangements
Visa (if applicable) and accommodation arrangements will be made by the applicants.
