PolyU has achieved the third highest number in Hong Kong of the world’s most recognised researchers in this year’s Clarivate Analytics list of "Highly Cited Researchers 2022", underscoring these scholars’ significant research impact.

Twelve PolyU academics (including two former PolyU colleagues) were among a total of 6,938 researchers from 69 countries and regions from a diverse range of research fields.

The list identifies the most influential scholars around the world, determined by their multiple highly cited papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and year in the Web of Science citation index over the last decade.

The inclusion of 12 PolyU academics in the list is a testament to the University’s pursuit of research excellence and its commitment to positive societal impact on various fronts. PolyU researchers featured in the list are as follows. One researcher has been listed in two categories:

PolyU has collaborated with the Hong Kong Space Museum and the Planetary Remote Sensing Laboratory of PolyU’s Research Centre for Deep Space Explorations, supported by the China National Space Administration’s Information Office, to showcase an interactive exhibit “Moon | Mars VR”, on display for one year from December 2022. Powered by PolyU’s cutting-edge technology that assists the Nation’s space missions, the virtual reality exhibit allows the public to virtually experience spacewalking and explore the landing sites of Chang’e-4 and Tianwen-1 spacecrafts on the Moon and Mars.

Led by Professor Wu Bo, Fiona Cheung Professor in Spatial Science, Associate Director of Research Centre for Deep Space Explorations and Associate Head of the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics and his research team, the VR exhibit makes use of data provided by the relevant China space agencies to create a virtual reality environment of landing sites on the Moon and Mars that allows visitors to experience spacewalking on the two celestial bodies.

The PolyU Library Extension Project has won the Best of Design Awards from The Architect’s Newspaper under the category ‘Library’.

The Best of Design Awards is a unique project-based awards programme that showcases great buildings, building elements, interiors and installations from around the world. Entries are judged by renowned architectural experts according to presentation, evidence of innovation, creative use of new technology, sustainability and, most importantly, good design.

PolyU's Pao Yue-kong Library has always served as a place of learning and provided opportunities for the PolyU community to acquire, create and share knowledge. The Campus Development Office collaborated with the project team to design, construct and install a rooftop addition that combines indoor spaces with skylights and outdoor areas to provide a stimulating and dynamic learning environment.

As the Aviation Services Research Centre (ASRC) celebrates its 10th anniversary, Boeing and PolyU have announced an agreement to expand their cooperation with regards to the ASRC to promote significant efficiency improvements in aviation maintenance and manufacturing. The new agreement will extend the cooperation between the parties at the Centre for a further five years. It also enables the ASRC to expand into digital manufacturing and focus more closely on disruptive and innovative technologies to drive sustainability in support of Maintenance Repair and Overhaul and manufacturing across China and Southeast Asia.

With ongoing support from Boeing, further synergy is facilitated between the PolyU’s Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering, the Cadet Pilot Training Programme, aircraft maintenance training, the applied research conducted and the innovative technologies developed at the ASRC. This will, in turn, support industry needs and effectively create an aviation centre of excellence in research and learning for future aviators and engineers.

As part of its anniversary celebrations, ASRC held an open day on 1 December to showcase the Centre’s accomplishments. The research undertaken by the ASRC in the past ten years has yielded numerous innovative achievements, including the "Automatic Analysis System for Pitting Corrosion on the Surface of Aircraft Jet Engines", which won a Gold Medal at the 46th Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions in 2018. The Centre has completed more than 60 research projects, with many of their solutions implemented into industry in both Hong Kong and mainland China.

1. How did you find out about PolyU? Why did you choose this university?

I was introduced to PolyU during my final year of high school, when my teacher invited school alumni who were studying at PolyU to share their study experiences. I chose this university because of its high placement in world university rankings and because it offers a course that matches my needs, with an attractive scholarship that covers most of my requirements while I live and study here.

2. How do you find the programme / academics / fellow students / environment / facilities here?

I really enjoy using the facilities at PolyU, especially the library, which is a comfortable and quiet place for study and work on my assignments. All the academic staff I’ve met are very kind and helpful, and always willing to provide me with the best assistance when I reach out to them. For example, my academic advisor, Dr Pamsy Hui, offered useful advice on my study plan and helped me find a part-time work and a research job. She also replied to my emails promptly, even at midnight. I have learned a lot from the programme, not only knowledge but also practical skills, including analytical and presentation skills that will be beneficial for my future career and help me prepare for graduate employment. I have also learned a lot from my peers, who come from Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan, Canada, and other places, through exchanging ideas and collaborating on group assignments.

3. What has been the best part of being an international student at PolyU so far?

The best part is equality and inclusion: at PolyU, we are treated just the same as the local students. As an international student, I’ve been given equal opportunities as local students to participate in exchange programmes, competitions, Work-Integrated Education, and Service-Learning. I feel respected by the University as an important part of our community.

4. How would you describe Hong Kong? And what is the best part of studying in Hong Kong / Asia?

Hong Kong is full of delicious food and abounds in hiking trails. I love to enjoy the most celebrated dishes of different countries, explore the natural beauty of Hong Kong, and relax through hiking. Life in Hong Kong is also very convenient – I can go anywhere here by taking the MTR or a bus. Coming from an Asian country (Malaysia), for me, the best thing about studying in Hong Kong is that it is not that culturally different from my home country. This allowed me to adapt very quickly to the environment of Hong Kong, a seamless gateway to the global community.
