Research @ Faculty of Science 2023

6 Research Focus We currently have three major research areas: • Applied Optimisation and Operations Research • Applied Statistics and Financial Mathematics • Engineering and Computational Mathematics Our Aim We aim to further strengthen our position as a world-leading international Applied Mathematics centre of excellence facilitating learning through high-quality teaching and research. PolyU has been listed in the world’s top 100 in Statistics and Operational Research for five consecutive years since 2018 and close to top 100 in Mathematics in recent years, both by the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Ranking. In the U.S. News & World Report 2023, PolyU ranks 47th in Best Global Universities under subject category Mathematics. Growing International Presence Our Department provides research funding for excellent researchers to collaborate with our faculty members. We also invite renowned researchers to deliver distinguished lectures, as well as exchange ideas, through organising and hosting international conferences and workshops. In partnership with the Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation, we co-organised the Masters of Abstraction 2019–Laureates of Mathematics and Computer Science Forum with the Department of Computing. Recipients of the renowned ACM Turing Award, ACM Prize in Computing, Fields Medal and international scholars, including Mathematics laureate Prof. Efim Zelmanov (1994 Fields Medal awardee), were brought together to share expertise and explore “How AI and Big Data are Driving Innovation”. In collaboration with Brown University and Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College, our department hosted the 7th International Conference on Scientific Computing and Partial Differential Equations (SCPDE23) in 2023 May, featuring a diverse group of international speakers and promoting research interests in scientific computing and partial differential equations, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary exploration and real-world applications. Increasing Research Power We organise grant application experience sharing sessions and provide financial support for external peer reviews and collaborators. The following table shows our Department’s growing track record of obtaining RGC GRF/ECS grants: AMA achieved a very satisfactory performance in the 2022/23 GRF/ECS Exercise (17 and 2 respectively). We also received the first CRF grant among all Mathematics departments in 2021/22 and two projects were awarded NSFC/RGC Joint Research Scheme 2022/23. On top of RGC grants, our colleagues have also received grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Council for the AIDS Trust Fund, the Food and Health Bureau, and other industry grant agencies, such as Alibaba, Blue Balloon Innovative, Esquel, Huawei, Value Exchange International and 7-Eleven Stores. An amount of HK$3M was awarded under CAS-Croucher Funding Scheme for Joint Laboratories in 2022.
