4 Combating COVID with Biocompatible, Non-toxic, Antibacterial and Antiviral Coating People are now more concerned about hygiene than ever amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The Grand Rise Technology Limited, co-founded by our researchers in 2019, developed a novel technology based on the patented core-shell particle technology platform, enabling a new class of amphiphilic core-shell nanoparticles for a wide range of applications such as anti-microbial coating solutions. The company successfully developed the CareCoatexTM Pro Ultra bio-based anti-microbial coating and manufactured the CareCoatexTM bio-based anti-microbial FFP2 3D face masks to meet the huge demand for safe and eco-friendly anti-microbial products from the general public and different industries. The anti-microbial coating has been widely used in the Government’s isolation facilities and University dormitories. This technology has been awarded accolades in international competitions including the Environmental Impact Award in the Alibaba Entrepreneurs Fund/HSBC JUMPSTARTER 2022 Global Pitch Competition and the first prize of Greater Bay Area Sustainability Innovation Challenge (GBASIC) 2022. The company was selected as one of the Forbes Asia 100 To Watch 2022 companies/startups. The company also received the Excellence in Research Application Award of the Hong Kong Innopreneur Awards 2022 for their innovative use of core-shell nanoparticle technology to develop eco-friendly and safe biomaterials-based coatings. Drug Discovery and Cancer (D&C): We aim to understand the pathogenesis of several cancer types and thereby fabricate drugs to combat them. We have established a drug development platform to generate new drugs for commercialisation. Synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry (SMC): We focus on structure to examine the therapeutic effects of anti-cancer drugs, anti-microbial drugs and traditional Chinese medicinal herbs. Chemical Biology and Healthcare (CBH): Our focus is to develop novel chemical entities and mass spectrometrybased metabolomics to identify biomarkers and mechanisms of disease. Materials and Sustainable Chemistry (MSC): We focus on efficient renewable energy conversion and storage for sustainable development, aligning with industrial interests and the Hong Kong government's Smart City initiative. Molecular Design for Functional Materials (MDFM): We focus on the development and optimisation of molecules and advanced nanomaterials for a wide range of applications including pharmaceuticals, catalysts, advanced electronics and biomaterials. Our Mission Our mission is to deliver high-quality impactful research that promotes health and fights diseases. We employ multi-faceted strategies to promote interdisciplinary research efforts which aim at establishing a vibrant and sustainable research environment that generates excellent research for positive impacts to society and industry. Research Focus Our department currently focuses on five major research areas: Impact Stories Combating Counterfeiting and Tampering of Products by using Nano-based Ink Technology Our researchers have invented a new indelible printing ink for tamper-proof product packaging. This “Anti-erasing” (ATE) ink can be used to print product information labels which provide visible evidence to consumers if the label has been altered. Our ink’s tracing marks also enable anticounterfeiting investigations to track and trace fraudulent items throughout supply chains. Our ATE ink has attracted intense interest from the industry and is already being used by China Mengniu Dairy Company in their production lines.
