27 Department of Food Science and Nutrition It aims to pursue cutting-edge research in Food Science and Human Health via inter-disciplinary collaboration, providing innovative and sustainable solutions to the food and healthcare industry and promoting public health in the community. Research Centre for Chinese Medicine Innovation (RCMI) aims to facilitate impactful interdisciplinary research at PolyU and provide scientific evidence to elucidate traditional Chinese Medicine theory for better understanding by the research community, medical community and the public. PolyU-Yakult Joint Research Laboratory for Probiotics and Prebiotics in Human Health focuses on promoting high-impact research in probiotics and prebiotics for the prevention and treatment of gut and brain diseases and eczema. Evidence-based research will form a basis to increase awareness and understanding amongst the public of probiotics and prebiotics and their intake for personal health, altogether contributing to Hong Kong, the nation and the world. PolyU-Increasepharm Joint Research Laboratory for New Drug Development focuses on developing a series of herbal-based small-molecule drugs, including innovative drugs for the treatment of dementia and prevention of cognitive decline. The Joint Laboratory would explore and deliver innovative drugs for the treatment of ophthalmic diseases with the Novel Drug Delivery System. Research Institute for Future Food (RiFood) has three main Research Directions, namely Food Sustainability, Smart Technology and Functional Food Development, and Nutrition and Human Health. It aims to be a world-leading research institute that advances and transfers knowledge by research, public education and professional service to address the key challenges in food science and human health, for the benefit of Hong Kong, the nation and the world. State Key Laboratory of Chinese Medicine and Molecular Pharmacology (Incubation) (SKL Incubation) focuses on cutting-edge Chinese medicine research. SKL Incubation occupies 2,000 m2 of the Shenzhen Hi-tech Industrial Park and features various functional laboratories for pre-clinical studies of drugs and health food. Food Safety and Technology Research Centre (FSTRC) fosters local and international food safety research collaborations. The FSTRC has world-leading research facilities for food testing, including Chemical Analysis Laboratory, Fermenter Room, Cell Culture Room, Mass Spectrometry Room, Food Processing Laboratory and Sensory Evaluation Laboratory. Laboratory for Infant & Child Nutrition located in the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP). The 3,000 sq. ft. laboratory is dedicated to infant and child nutrition research for the local population. This lab features analysis instruments such as GC-FID, GC-MS, HPLC-DAD and ICP-MS to examine macro and micronutrients and trace metal profiles in food samples and human samples such as blood and breastmilk. Suga Research Laboratory for Sustainable Urban Green Agriculture is Hong Kong’s first research platform focusing on Urban Agriculture. Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Food Biological Safety Control focuses on research activities and projects for conducting food biological safety risk assessment, developing rapid detection methods for foodborne pathogens, inventing new food processing and packaging technology and providing food safety services in Hong Kong and Shenzhen.
