PolyU Researchers Win Health Promotion and COVID-19 Awards at Health Research Symposium 2021

The biennial Health Research Symposium organised by Hong Kong’s Food and Health Bureau was recently held in hybrid mode on 23 November 2021 with the theme of “Implementing Evidence-Based Research in the Era of COVID-19 and Other Global Health Challenges”. The symposium, which attracted more than 800 participants, also commemorated the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Bureau’s Health and Medical Research Fund (HMRF). To recognise the excellent efforts of researchers in their HMRF-funded COVID-19 projects and to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the HMRF, various awards were presented at the symposium. Dr Gilman Siu Kit-hang, Associate Professor at PolyU’s Department of Health Technology and Informatics, was among the five winners of the Outstanding Project Team on COVID-19 Research Awards. In addition, Prof. Angela Leung Yee-man of PolyU’s School of Nursing was one of only two recipients of the Excellent Health Promotion Project Awards.

PolyU’s Faculty of Health and Social Sciences Welcomes Healthcare and Human Services Initiatives in the Chief Executive’s 2021 Policy Address

The Faculty of Health and Social Sciences (FHSS) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) welcomes the Government’s new initiatives in enhancing the healthcare and welfare services of Hong Kong as announced by the HKSAR Chief Executive the Hon. Mrs Carrie Lam in her 2021 Policy Address on 6 October 2021.   With our shared goal of realising the provision of quality, timely and reliable health and human services to the community, we support the policies and measures in the Policy Address that further enhance the protection of the health and well-being of Hong Kong people.   As one of the city’s major providers of accredited tertiary education in health and human services disciplines, we concur with the Government’s move to increase the number of local healthcare training places, promote the development of primary healthcare services, and foster medical-social collaboration to meet the rising demand for health and social care from the territory’s ageing population.   Furthermore, we strongly support the Government’s following up of the proposal to amend relevant legislation to allow patients to directly access the services of healthcare professionals such as occupational therapists and physiotherapists without needing to first attain a doctor’s referral. If implemented, this will greatly relieve the heavy workload of doctors and reduce delays and costs for patients.   We also support the Government’s decision to make continuing professional education and development a mandatory requirement to ensure the professional competency of healthcare professionals, as this will help to protect the public interest as well as assist in laying out a progression path for healthcare professionals.

16 FHSS scholars ranked world’s top 2% scientists

16 FHSS academic staff members have been listed among the top 2% scientists in a global list released by the Stanford University. The ranking method is based on standardized citation metrics developed by a group of scientists led by John PA Ioannidis, a statistician at Stanford University. The scientists were grouped into 22 subject fields and 176 sub-fields using the indicators, which included information on citations, an individual’s scientific research output, co-authorship and a composite indicator for career-long citation impact up to the end of 2019. Congratulations to our top scientists on being ranked top in the world! This recognition shows their influence in their fields and demonstrates FHSS’s dedication in conducting world-class research.   FHSS’s Top Scientists List Name of Researcher Department Subject Field Rank in Field Field Size Benzie, Iris F.F.* Department of Health Technology and Informatics Nutrition & Dietetics 72 35,927 Yan, Hairong Department of Applied Social Sciences Cultural Studies 82 5,297 Shek, Daniel T.L.
