Introduction

Faculty of Humanities (FH) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is one of the youngest faculties of humanities in Hong Kong and full of energy in creating synergies among language, culture, and science in education and research. The year 2013 marks the fifth anniversary of the renaming of the Faculty and inception of the Department of Chinese Culture. Our vision is to be a leader in applied language sciences and bilingual China studies in Asia Pacific.

Over the past five years, the Faculty of Humanities developed the following five new programme areas based on our core strengths of language and culture studies, aiming to nurture highly effective professionals for the development of Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and the region:

  1. Applied language sciences at doctoral level, being the first in Greater China

Apart from the above new programme areas, the five constituent units of the FH developed a wide range of general education (Cluster Area Requirements – CAR) subjects under the 4-year undergraduate curriculum structure with foci from language, culture, history, to philosophy in order to facilitate PolyU students’ better understanding of the nature and cultures of human beings as well as issues that our generation faces.

5 years, many partnerships formed

In 2010 and 2011, with the collaboration of eleven higher education institutions across Europe and South East Asia, FH was consecutively granted by the European Commission the first and only Erasmus Mundus mobility programme in Hong Kong for academic exchange between European higher education institutions with those from the South East Asia, with a funding amount of nearly €2.6 million.

Another significant collaboration is the launch of the Hong Kong Chapter with Corporate Communication International to provide a local centre for information and knowledge on corporate communication in Hong Kong.

Besides, the Faculty signed a number of agreements with leading universities in the world which provided numerous opportunities for our students to gain international exposure through overseas exchange or placement programmes.

5 years, 5 units, one team

With the inception of the Department of Chinese Culture in 2008, the FH became a faculty with five academic units. They are:

  • Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies (CBS) (incorporating the Chinese Language Centre(CLC))
  • Department of Chinese Culture (CC)
  • Department of English (ENGL)
  • English Language Centre (ELC)
  • General Education Centre (GEC)

Each unit of FH has specialized areas of focus but all five units work towards one goal to provide an all-round and holistic education to our students to meet the needs of our increasingly knowledge-based and technology-intensive society.

Words of Appreciation from Dean:

Five is a small number, and often the first natural stop when we learn to count (that is, when we run out of fingers in a hand). Five years, however, is not a very short time. It is enough for a baby to grow into a toddler, and for most students to finish either a bachelor degree or a doctorate. For me personally, the past five years have been one the most rewarding periods of my life: a period when I was able to work with a team of wonderful and capable colleagues at FH to bring this new faculty to international recognition and to create opportunities for our talented colleagues. Instead of listing each and every of our faculty members and supporting staff members to show my appreciation, please allow me to simply thank you for giving me the privilege to work together with you. I look forward to the next five years together so that we can achieve a perfect 10!

(by Professor Huang Chu-ren)
