Established in 1974, the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering (EIE), formerly known as the Department of Electronic Engineering, has gone through an exciting course of development, from a teaching department that primarily focused on the training of electronic engineers in the 1970s and 1980s, through a rapid transformation in the 1990s to a research active department, and now to an academic department providing a range of engineering programmes as well as engaging in forefront research in electronics, communications, multimedia / information technologies, Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, Internet of Things, future wireless networks, biophotonics, optoelectronics, as well as photonic systems and devices.

The Department strives for excellence in teaching and research. In the past four decades, we have established ourselves as a provider of quality engineering education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well as a contributor to the global development of cutting-edge research in selected areas in electronic and information engineering and related cross-disciplinary areas.

Many of our bachelor degree graduates have joined large corporations such as Airport Authority Hong Kong, China Mobile Hong Kong Co. Ltd., Fujitsu Hong Kong Ltd., Hewlett-Packard HK SAR Ltd., HKT, Hong Kong Productivity Council, Hospital Authority, HSBC, Hong Kong SAR Government, and The Hong Kong Jockey Club, etc. and have become professional engineers or IT professionals. Some of them have assumed managerial roles in the corporations after a few years’ training. Our research degree graduates are also highly sought after by leading universities such as Imperial College London, National University of Singapore, The University of British Columbia, The University of New South Wales, and University of Pennsylvania; and by internationally renowned corporations such as Microsoft Hong Kong Ltd. and Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd.

Our programmes aim at nurturing expertise in the area of information and communication technology (ICT) and supporting the related industries in Hong Kong and worldwide. We put students at the centre and prepare them for the real-world engineering challenges. Through providing rigorous technical training and complementary activities, we aim to produce not only professional engineers, but also keen lifelong learners and responsible world citizens. We therefore expect our students to possess not only problem-solving skills but also a high level of integrity, social responsibility and respect for others.

In research, we aim to produce high-impact research outputs that are relevant to industry and society. We endeavour to move ahead of the rapid technological developments and to answer the recent global call for sustainable development by applying our expertise to create environmental-friendly, sustainable and competitive research outputs. We are leading internationally in the areas of communication systems, meta-devices, multimedia signal processing, nano-photonics, nonlinear optical system, optical communications, and thin film opto-electronics. We are proud to provide the students with an impressive range of laboratory facilities that cover major technological areas in electronics, communications, computer systems, and multimedia / information technologies.
