To get the first ever PolyU project supported by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council’s (RGC) Theme-based Research Scheme off to a rolling start, a meeting cum international workshop was held on 7 and 8 February 2018. Nearly 50 researchers and academics involved in the project attended the workshop, which began with welcoming remarks from Prof. Alex Wai, Vice President (Research Development), and Prof. You-lin Xu, Dean of the Faculty of Construction and Environment (FCE). Keynote speeches on air pollution in China and air quality research were respectively delivered by Prof. Yuanhang Zhang, Academician of the Chinese Engineering Academy, and Dr Steven Brown of the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory in the US. There were also invited speeches from Dr Kenneth Leung of the Environment Protection Department (EPD) of the Hong Kong Government and Prof. Xinming Wang of the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences before the principal investigator, Prof. Tao Wang of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), and some of his collaborators Prof. Hai Guo (CEE), Dr Kin-fai Ho of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prof. Shuncheng Lee (CEE), Dr Zhe Wang (CEE), and Dr Fu Xiao (BSE) spoke on various aspects of the project.

The speakers on the second day of the workshop included Prof. Allen Zheng, Associate Director of the Institute for Environmental and Climate Research of Jinan University; Prof. Guy Brasseur of the Max Planck Institute in Germany; Dr Chun-ho Liu of the University of Hong Kong; a representative of Prof. Alexis Lau of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; and Dr Peter Louie of the EPD. The workshop facilitated a fruitful discussion of the implementation and management of the collaborative project.
