FCE Public Lecture on "Wind energy: from micro to macro scale"
This talk will introduce you how to harvest wind energy of various sizes. These include micro scale producing milliwatts, meso scale at kilowatts, and macro scale making megawatts. The state-of-the-art for currently proven technologies for wind energy harvesting will be presented first. The micro wind energy harvesting from flow-induced instability will be introduced to provide power to a wireless sensor network for cost-effective structural health monitoring. A methodology of using small wind turbines for dual purposes, improving the aerodynamic performance of flexible bridge girders and wind energy harvesting will be addressed. Finally a wind tunnel test of a vertical axis wind turbine will be presented for designing wind farms. Moreover the contribution of civil engineering to the development of large wind farms will be discussed in this talk.
