HKJC Donation to Support Research on Risk Management of Urban Trees

A 3-year project to monitor and detect trees¡¦ rotations and tilt angles by means of Smart Sensing Technologies has been awarded HK$32.28 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. It is expected to facilitate technically defensible management decisions and enhance public safety, identify hazardous trees and enable their timely removal, as well as the long-term preservation of trees that are not imminent threats.

Led by Dr Charles Wong of the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics (LSGI), the project team includes Prof. John Shi, Head of LSGI, Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, Director of the Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development, Dr Ben Leu of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), Dr Billy Hau of The University of Hong Kong, Prof. Yu-Hsing Wang of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Friends of the Earth. Government Departments including the Greening, Landscape and Tree Management Section of the Development Bureau, the Highways Department, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Architectural Services Department, and the Energizing Kowloon East Office also support this project.

As the first ever large-scale near-real-time tree risk management project in Hong Kong, the project will also engage different stakeholders to build knowledge of our urban forestry, providing public education programmes to inspire young adults to careers in the arboricultural industry.

Building for a Good Cause

As part of the training for a career in the construction industry, 120 Higher Diploma students and 7 undergraduates from the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE) participated in a summer construction project to build 3 shelters. Under the supervision of professional engineers at PolyU¡¦s Industrial Centre, students assumed one of various roles that are commonly found in real life construction projects, such as Authorized Person, Project Manager, Registered Structural Engineer, Site Engineer, Quantity Surveyor, BIM Engineer, Safety Officer etc. to implement the project. Construction materials were mainly donated by the Contractor¡¦s Authorised Signatory Association and the Registered Minor Works Contractor Signatory Association. Using advanced technologies and equipment, students designed the shelters with the aid of Autodesk Revits, a building information modeling software, and planned a schedule for the construction project with the aid of Microsoft Project, a project management software. Not only were they exposed to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in the process, students also learnt about the importance of teamwork. The finished shelters were later given to the Ebenezer School & Home for the Visually Impaired in a ceremony on 1 August 2017.

Meanwhile, 67 Higher Diploma students in Civil Engineering from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) put their skills to practical use in a construction project in Lai Chi Wo. Working in teams, they made enhancements to some farm paths, built a roof cover, and drew a 3-dimensional model of the village. It was a great learning experience for them all, thanks to the support from staff of the Industrial Centre.
