Our Programme

We provide this articulation programme, also known as a top-up programme, as an academic pathway for Higher Diploma / Associate Degree holders to qualify for a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in English for business communication.

 
Our Aims

We serve suitably-qualified individuals who seek to enhance their English language competence for the multilingual and multicultural workplace of the 21st century. Our programme enables learners to:

  • acquire an academic grounding in English language studies;
  • discover ways to explore the dynamic potential of the English language; and
  • formulate practical solutions to communicative problems in business service situations.

 
Programme Mode & Duration

Mode: Part-time (You will normally attend classes on weekday evenings as well as Saturdays and/ or Sundays)

 
Duration:

  • normal duration: 4 years (8 semesters)
  • maximum duration: 8 years (8 – 16 semesters)

 
Entrance Requirements

We invite you to apply for entry to this BA (Hons) programme if you already have, or expect to have by the time of entry:

  • a Higher Diploma or an Associate Degree in language studies, communication/media studies, business/management studies, or a related field; or
  • an equivalent qualification.

Those with academic qualifications in unrelated fields but with relevant work experience are also encouraged to apply.

Applicants who are strong in English will receive priority in the selection process.

 

Programme Structure & Subjects

To qualify for the BA (Hons) award, students are required to accumulate 75 credits (out of the total required credits, 24 of which will have to be at level 4 including 9 credits from core 3 credits from Capstone Project and 12 credits from elective subjects) by completing the required subjects below.

The Curriculum of BAEBPC programme consists of two parts:

Part I: General University Requirements (GUR)

1. Cluster-Area Requirements (CAR) (6 credits; min. 3 credits should be in subject designated as “China-related”)

2. Service Learning (3 credits; students may take a 3-credit free elective in lieu of the Service Learning requirement)

3. Language and Communication Requirements (LCR) v

Part II: Discipline Specific Requirements (DSR)

1. Discipline Specific Language Subjects (the default subjects of this requirement are 3 credits of ENGL2003 English for Advanced Academic Writing and 3 credits of CBS2904 Academic and Technical Chinese Writing)

2. Capstone Project (3 credits project for Language Studies)

4. BAEBPC Elective Subjects (24 credits) **

v Student not meeting the equivalent standard of the Undergraduate Degree Language and Communication Requirements (LCR) based on their previous studies in AD/HD programmes will be required to take up to 9 additional credits (6 credits in English and 3 credits in Chinese) for degree LCR subjects. Additional tuition fees will be charged accordingly.

Core Major Subjects are compulsory for all BAEBPC students and are organized around two topics i.e. (a) Focusing on Business English, and (b) Focusing on Communication, designed to provide students with a solid foundation of academic knowledge and professional skills for language professionals. All these subjects are 3 credits:

Focusing on Business English

  • ENGL3003 English Discourse in the Profession
  • ENGL3004 English for Technical & Web-Based Writing
  • ENGL3009 Language and Images in Advertising
  • ENGL4006 Understanding English Legal Texts

Focusing on Communication

  • ENGL3008 Fundamentals of Organisational Communication
  • ENGL3019 Fundamentals of Media Communication
  • ENGL4004 Effective Communication for Public Relations
  • ENGL4008 Intercultural Communicative Competence

Elective Subjects further broaden BAEBPC students’ academic and professional vision and a global outlook.

Further Information

This programme is offered by the Department of English (ENGL) of Faculty of Humanities (FH) at PolyU, to be administered by PolyU’s School of Professional Education and Executive Development (SPEED). Classes are held on the PolyU extended campus.

Upon successful completion of the programme, the degree will be awarded by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
