Title of Thesis

Ideological Constructions and Representations of Chinese Muslim Groups in Chinese and U.S. Media (2001-2014): A comparative approach

Description of Thesis Research

The proposed study will examine how were the Chinese Muslim groups ideologically framed in American and Chinese English media after 9/11 attack, specifically during ordinary times (09/11/2001-2008) and crisis times (2009-2014). I will draw on the framework of CDA and corpus linguistics to investigate 1) the linguistic construction of this community in news discourse; 2) the ideological framing of Chinese Muslims by American and Chinese journalists in different periods of time, and 3) the news’ articulation of power relations in the corresponding social contexts.
