Title of thesis:

Metaphorical Framing in Government Discourse: A Corpus-based Analysis of Speeches by Principal Officials in Hong Kong SAR (1997-2017)

Description of thesis research:

My PhD thesis looks at conceptual metaphor patterns in a corpus of Hong Kong government discourse. Drawing on the framework of Critical Metaphor Analysis and Conceptual Mapping Model, the study adopts tools from corpus linguistics to examine: 1) how the combined effects of multiple factors may influence metaphor use in political discourse, and 2) how the mapping principles between metaphor source-target pairings may reflect the ways in which metaphors are used in the framing of different societal issues in post-colonial Hong Kong.
