Student Exchange Programme

Call for application for 2019-20 international exchange

Dear students,

This message serves as the call for applications for the 2019-20 ENGL overseas exchange programme.

ENGL, in association with the International Affairs Office (IAO), will offer a combination of 25 places to BAESP students to study during semester two of the 2019/20 academic year. There will be open spots for students who wish to study at universities in Australia, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, UK, USA.

All year two students with GPA’s above 2.7 from semester one (year two) are eligible to apply. Selection criteria include the student’s cumulative GPA from year one and year two, extra-curricular activities, and performance at a selection interview.

Applications for the ENGL student exchange programme will be accepted from the 8th through the 22ndof February, 2019.If you would like to go on exchange in Year 3, this is the time for you to submit your application; applications for the semester-long exchange are only reviewed once a year. For this reason, we recommend that you apply even if you are currently undecided about this opportunity.

Students participating in the international student exchange will receive financial assistance from PolyU. The funding amount and students’ eligibility vary according to the exchange destination and duration. For more information, please check the funding details on IAO’s website: https://www.polyu.edu.hk/international/outgoing-students.

Students should note that:

  1. The BAESP exchange program is set up for students to go on exchange during semester two of year three so that they do not miss the core subject, ENGL3002 Research Methods for Language Studies, which is only offered during semester one.
  2. As students under the 4-year curriculum have to finish the compulsory level-4 BAESP subjects and the Capstone Project in year four (final Year, over two consecutive semesters), they are, in most cases, not allowed to go for exchange during their final year. Exceptions may be made in cases of high-achieving students who wish to attend Huddersfield or UNIMORE in semester one and have completed important core subjects.
  3. Students who wish to study in Spain or Japan must take one Spanish or Japanese subject during semester one of year three at PolyU and obtain at least a Pass. The offer will be withdrawn if a candidate fails the subject.

If you are interested, please follow the procedures below:

  1. Read the financial assistance information on the IAO website (https://www.polyu.edu.hk/international/outgoing-students) and the credit transfer policy on the ENGL website (https://www.polyu.edu.hk/engl/event/studentexchange/credit_transfer/)to understand more about the exchange programme, such as eligibility, duration, credit transfer, and financial support.
  2. Conduct some research on your preferred host institutions listed in the below table (e.g. course offerings, GPA and language proficiency requirements, academic calendar, and cost of living). If you are pursuing the major & minor pathway, you should note that some institutions may only allow exchange students to choose subjects within one faculty/department, and this will limit students’ choices for credit transfer towards their Minor programs at PolyU. Information about exchange universities is available on the IAO website at https://www2.polyu.edu.hk/international/pdf/Partner_Info.pdf
  3. Fill in the application form and submit it with the supporting documents (hard copy only) to Miss Christy Chan at AG428 on or before 5:00pm on the 22nd of February, 2019.
  4. The short-listed candidates will be interviewed in late March. Details about the time and venue will be announced later by email.
  5. Successful applicants will be notified individually in June/July 2019 AFTER the release of their GPA’s from semester two.
