Student Exchange Programme

Call for application for 2017-18 international exchange

Dear students,

This message is to call for application for the 2017-2018 ENGL overseas exchange programme.

ENGL, in association with the International Affairs Office (IAO) will offer a combination of 33 places to BAESP students to study in Semester Two, 2017/18 in universities in Australia, Brunei, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Portugal, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, the UK, USA.

Application is open for Year 2 students, and the only application requirement is a Semester 1 of Year 2 GPA above 2.7. However, the final selection will be based on cumulative GPA of Year One and Year Two, extra-curricular activities, and performance at a selection interview.

The application for ENGL student exchange programme is open from 13 to 20 February 2017. If you would like to go on exchange in Year 3, this is the time for you to submit your application, since application for semester-long exchange opens once a year. Therefore, we highly suggest you apply, even if you are not sure yet whether you will be able to go.

Students participating in the international student exchange will receive financial assistance from PolyU. Eligibility and amount vary according to exchange destination and duration. Please check the funding details on IAO’s website: https://www.polyu.edu.hk/international/outgoing-students .

Students should note that:

  1. BAESP students are recommended to go on exchange in Semester 2 of Year 3 so that they would not miss the core subject ENGL3002 Research Methods for Language Studies, which is only open in Semester 1.
  2. Since students under the 4-year curriculum have to finish the compulsory Level-4 BAESP subjects and the Capstone Project in Year 4 (Final Year, in two consecutive semesters), they are NOT allowed to go for exchange in their Final Year.
  3. Students who wish to study in Spain or Japan must take one Spanish or Japanese subject in Sem 1 of Year 3 at PolyU and obtain at least a Pass. The offer will be withdrawn if a candidate fails the subject.

If you are interested, please follow the procedures:

  1. Read the Financial Assistance information on IAO website (https://www.polyu.edu.hk/international/outgoing-students) and the credit transfer policy on ENGL website (https://www.polyu.edu.hk/engl/event/studentexchange/credit_transfer/  ) to understand more about the exchange programme, such as eligibility, duration, credit transfer, and financial support.
  2. Research on your preferred host institutions (e.g. course offerings, GPA and language proficiency requirements, academic calendar, cost of living, etc.). If you are taking the Major & Minor Pathway, you should note that some institutions may only allow exchange students to choose subjects within one faculty/department, which will limit students’ choices for credit transfer towards their Minor programs at PolyU.  Information about exchange universities is available on IAO website at https://www2.polyu.edu.hk/international/pdf/FH.pdf .  You can also view the list of subjects taken by previous students during exchange from https://www.polyu.edu.hk/engl/event/studentexchange/departmentalexchange
  3. Fill in the application form and submit it with the supporting documents (hard copy only) to Miss Jesmine Lau at AG423 on or before 5:00pm. 20 February 2017.
  4. The short-listed candidates will be interviewed during 27 Feb and 3 March. Details of time and venue will be announced later by email.
  5. Successful applicants will be notified individually in June/July 2017 AFTER the release of Semester 2 GPA.
